Quite the opposite, when I studied in France back in 1991, you could pay cashless almost anywhere already then (I stayed in a suburb of Lyon) - more advanced in this respect than most countries in Europe then.

Therefore, it's unbelievable to me how people can still walk around with a ton of cash, totally unnecessary in 99.99% of the cases.

Sounds like he either might have been new to the game or just too drunk to bother, but the first thing that most sensible men do when they get back to the room is lock up their valuables, either in the hotel safe or even in a piece of luggage with a lock on it. Out of sight, out of mind.

 

You just set a few thousand aside or whatever your obligations are for payment, and you just simply do not have to worry about the rest. These are crimes of opportunity, they're not going to break into the safe, they're not going to steal your luggage.

 

These are just basic survival skills and tests of a man's intelligence. He deserved it. He was reckless. Lesson learned.

Officially there is no prostitution.  Officially when I was getting the lost tax receipt report at the Police Station to get a new tax receipt from the Department of Land Transport their was not a Ladyboy receiving assistance in having an Indian Man pay for services.  

 

When this happens the queue gets pushed back.  The Thais find it just as entertaining as I do.
