I have ridden here for 20+ years and the number of locals who do not look before they cross the road is astounding. Is it a Buddha thing, do they believe he, or their amulet will protect them? Why is it so common.

At a crosswalk when the lights are on red then yes, that is correct.

 

But as of yet we don't know where she attempted to cross. Pedestrians have no rights at all on main roads unless they use the designated crossings.

You still have to be alert on the crossings as many drivers still don't recognize them.

Thai people often play "frogger" crossing the road and inch out slowly and wait until the vehicle passes them. This can really confuse tourists that don't know if they're going to fully cross or not so they swerve around trying to avoid each other.

 

I almost hit a person once years ago because I didn't understand this. Eventually I ended up totally stopping in the middle of the road and the guy was so confused as to why I didn't just keep going.

Very unlikely there's any video evidence unless it was  a security camera on a home. They didn't say where exactly this happened but you can kind of see from the picture it was a small 2 lane road.

 

Here's a random but representative road in Mae On district. As seen on the map this is a very rural area next to the mountains. These dirt bikes amongst others love speeding through the little villages on their day trips. The victim could have been some elderly women who isn't prepared to deal with high speed traffic.

 

The one thing we DO know is that you should always be respectful and never drive fast in residential zones until you're out on the open road. Even if  you hit someone and it was their fault the Thais likely won't care and expect you to watch out for others, regardless of what they do.

 

Look how they live right on the side of the road. They step one foot outside and they're on the road. It's an accident waiting to happen so be careful.

He was lucky that he didn't face mob lynch after accidentally killing a local because of own carelessness.

Was it because he quickly showed his remorse to victim's family?

Or was it in Chiang Mai often known for its generally gentle population?

Any chance of different story in Pattaya or Phuket in the similar situation?

If people would bother to look at the original article on the news website, they would clearly see pictures of the bike involved and the area of the accident.

The bike is a rental and the current tax sticker is clearly visible in the photograph.

Look at the photos, the rider is wearing quality safety gear, the big has good quality gear fitted. it is currently registered.

 

so the bike was fully legal and suitable for road use.

 

as to weather the rider was speeding or the lady who was hit goes, we will never know unless more information is released.

Sorry for this accident, but here in Pattaya, far too many farangs race their motorcycles at very high speeds without any consideration. What's more, the vehicles are often rigged and make a hellish noise. I would pay a lot of money out of my own pocket to support the police in taking action against these hooligans. No mercy!

She was crossing the road to get to a restaurant.  Likely many cars parked along the roadside, with so many eating out during the holidays.

 

Assume she darted out from between two massive SUV's without looking, giving the VICTIM on the bike less than a fraction of a second to react.

 

You can be shirley if he were speeding or actin' a fool on his bike, there would be quotes from witnesses.

 

But police have swung into action and indicated they will charge him to the full extent of the innocent man's credit line.
