Lambique Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I’m planning a 2-month trip to Southern Thailand, starting in Hat Yai. My goal is to explore authentic Thai culture, avoid overly touristy spots (e.g., Phuket), and experience the “real” Thailand. I’m also looking for budget-friendly islands to visit and would like to spend longer periods (around 2 weeks) in a few places to soak in the local vibe. Does anyone have recommendations for towns, islands, or lesser-known spots that fit this vibe? I’d also appreciate tips on long-stay accommodations or any hidden gems.

A trip to the south starting in Hat Yai?? Then you already are in the south!!😂
OneMoreFarang Posted January 4 Posted January 4 I was in that area a long time ago, so maybe the following is not up to date. That far south of Thailand is not really Thailand. You can read about the history of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat to get an idea about them. There are people out there who want to separate from Thailand - since decades. When I was there nobody wanted to travel in the dark because of the risk of attacks. If any of this is new to you then better check again where you want to go. 1
marin Posted January 4 Posted January 4 Being honest all I can say is sadly you are about 30 years late for this trip. Just stating facts. My first trip here in 1978 was to Hadyai, and Samilla on the way to Langkawi. The whole south was undiscovered. It really was heaven. 1

Popular Post grain Posted January 4 Popular Post Posted January 4 I lived in the South for over 20 years and traveled all over so I can give you a few ideas, Pretty well the best attractions are coastal, beaches & islands, though there are some nice waterfalls and caves around the interior. From HatYai you could head to Pakbara in Satun province and from there take the boats out to islands: Tarutao, Lipe, Adang. Next Province up is Trang (more islands) then Krabi (more islands) You can island hop up that entire western coastline (Andaman Sea side). Alternatively, you can go to Songkhla, then move up the eastern coast (Gulf side) to Koh Samui/Koh Phangan. If you're more into islands/beaches then the Andaman side has more to offer. You also need to consider time of year, as the weather patterns are different for either side. You really need to get hold of a good guide book, something like the Lonely Planet, that will give you all the details and recommend places to stay. You can also look at a map of the South and work out which places catch your attention, then look on YouTube for trip reports, they usually go into great details regarding places to stay, interesting restaurants and accommodation. 3 1
Popular Post KhunLA Posted January 4 Popular Post Posted January 4 Will you be self driving, my choice, or relying on public trans. We were down south, Betong, Yala, from Prachuap Khiri Khan, March 2024. Never felt unsafe, and really enjoyed the trip. First time pass Phattalung or Satun. Did one of our usual loops. Actually didn't spend much time at Hat Yai or below. One night each way at Hat Yai, I think, as not that far from Betong. We live on the Gulf coast, and been down along so many times. Nice scenic spots all around the south, why it's our favorite part of the country. Some spectacular landscape. We travel with a dog, so accommodation choices are limited, especially in the south, as not as pet friendly. Plenty of thrifty, budget accommodations & up. We're thrifty travelers, as wouldn't use the amenities the high end places offer and charge for anyway. Not even a big brekkie person, so prefer no mandatory brekkie buffet places. You'll have no problem finding places to stay, and I simply use Booking.com for info, then cross reference with Gmaps, for phone numbers to call and book direct. Usually cheaper, and more accurate info. Sometimes, don't even bother with Booking.com, as Gmap has better info, photos at times. Same with restaurants, once at hotel, simply use Gmap 'nearby' restaurants and start your peeking. Some thoughts of a couple place during March 2024 outing, and if stroll through that thread, maybe some more about the south, during previous O&A (out & abouts). https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/3/#findComment-18788290 2 1 1
KhunLA Posted January 4 Posted January 4 Scrolling through the thread, 'Leaving the BarStool', and here's some post from the South, PKK & below. https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/5/#findComment-19187265 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/5/#findComment-19267295 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/#findComment-18155597 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/#findComment-18157490 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/#findComment-18157560 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/2/ https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/2/#findComment-18158948 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/2/#findComment-18159087 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/2/#findComment-18369090 https://aseannow.com/topic/1298442-leaving-the-bar-stool/page/3/#findComment-18560862 1 1
Lambique Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Thank you for ideas already, found some new places. 🙂 Time of Year: • February to April (60 days, ending before Songkran). Travel Style: • Traveling alone. • Using local buses (and possibly trains) for intercity travel—preferably no more than 3 hours per ride. • No car or motorbike rentals. • A mix of “like a local” and “like a tourist” experiences. East Coast Considerations: • I’ve visited Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao several times before, so no need this time. • Unsure about Nakhon Si Thammarat—open to suggestions. Preliminary Itinerary: • Fly from Bangkok to Hat Yai. • Hat Yai (including a trip to Songkhla). • Satun (including a trip to Pak Bara - Tarutao National Park ) • Trang (including a trip to Koh Muk). • ? Phatthalung (worth stopping here?). • Krabi Town (including a trip to Ao Nang). • Koh Yao Noi. • Khao Sok National Park. • ? Phang Nga (open to ideas). • ? Surat Thani (not sure if it’s worth staying). • ? Chumphon. • Fly back to Bangkok. More tips welcome
grain Posted January 4 Posted January 4 Nothing much at all to see and do in Phatthalung, other than the lake and see waterbirds, but you can see much of that if you so desire when in Songkhla, also if you're doing Satun-Trang-Krabi then going to Phatthalung is kinda backtracking. NST has a very important and impressive wat, and not much else of interest, but if you've already seen a few of the big Bangkok wats then there's not much point going out your way to see one more big impressive wat. There are some nice beaches and resorts along the NST coastline but they're not easy to reach without your own transport. Krabi town is quite nice, Ao Nang too, and definetly go to Railay for amazing scenery. If you want to see more islands you can consider Koh Lanta. PhangNga Bay is famous for the karst islands and is mainly visited by tours either from Krabi or Phuket. There are loads of tour agents in Krabi town and you'll soon get all the details on visiting the attractions. At Krabi there's also the hot springs, and Wat Tham Sua with a cave temple. Surat Thani is ok but from a tourist perspective it's mainly just a place you pass through on route to Samui and the other islands, likewise Chumphon, the jumping off point for Koh Tao. A more interesting route from Krabi would be PhangNga - Khao Lak - Ranong - Chumphon. 1
Lambique Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Thank you, good ideas i didn't think of. Have an new idea , will use Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) as a guideline From Trang To Ranong. Updated Itinerary: • Fly from Bangkok to Hat Yai. • Hat Yai (including a trip to Songkhla). • Satun (including a trip to Pak Bara - Tarutao National Park ) • Trang (including a trip to Koh Muk). • Krabi Town (including a trip to Ao Nang). • Koh Yao Noi. (maybe) • Khao Sok National Park. • PhangNga • Khao Lak • Ranong • Chumphon. Back To Bangkok
grain Posted January 4 Posted January 4 Looking good now, I think you've planned a perfect route. Personally I'd skip Satun provincial capital and just head straight for Pakbaba. I've been a couple of times to Koh Tarutao and think it's the least impressive island there. Much better are Koh Bulon Lae and Koh Lipe.
