Early morning a stone vold sober Russian attempts to make a joke about the invasion of Ukraine with a bunch of stone cold sober Ukrainians!

What could possibly go wrong?

I've had Russians explain to me that they don't really joke, nor do they smile or talk to strangers.  It's a cultural defensive trait to never get noticed or get in troubke.

I doubt a Russian would just start to joke with people at another table.  And alcohol would not be a factor.

I see that many people here think that this is a quarrel between a Russian and a Ukrainian.
But it is almost impossible for a Ukrainian man to leave the country now.
I would suppose that both of them are Russians.
When I came to Russian Consulate in Phuket to vote for the national leader in the previous year I found out that many people in the queue looked disapprovingly at the Z symbols on my clothes. Although Vladimir Putin also won the election in Phuket, the margin over his competitor was minimal. While tourists from Russia voted correctly, expats voted like traitors.

So I would assume that this was a quarrel between an expat and a tourist, and both of them are Russian citizens.

And I also assume that Z guy is a victim and he was just defending himself.

actually,  I've never really found Thai's to have a sense of humor as they just don't get jokes,   but maybe he needs to practice the way he tells jokes.  

If it was a Thai that stabbed him,  he's lucky he didn't bring his gun,   and that's no joke

Different cultures have different humour, Thais, like the Americans don't get subtle humour it has to be in your face but Thais are easy to take offence at anything to do with their or the country's dignity.

They don't start to joke but they can start talking to you in Russian (the majority of them don't speak any foreign language) and being irritated you don't understand them thus don't "respect" them...

You've apparently never had any Russian friends.... Hard to imagine, even if never having had any Russian friends, that one could think that there's such a large group of human beings with no sense of humor. Context is everything. Cultural context makes things complicated, but it doesn't take away the human nature from people.

A single stab is better than killing civilians or shooting down passenger planes (not for the first time). Perhaps the Russian simply lacked the experience of living among civilization. History shows that this is close to the Russians.
