In a recent speech in the Mae Chan district, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra put forward a controversial proposal to legalise online gambling in Thailand. Mr. Thaksin argues that by regulating the activity with strict guidelines, age restrictions, and appropriate taxes, the government could effectively diminish the thriving underground market. It's a bold move aimed at controlling a trend increasingly occupied by approximately 2.5 to 4 million Thai residents on a daily basis.

 

Currently, online gambling in Thailand operates outside the law, often linked to wider issues such as fake banking accounts and personal data theft. Mr. Thaksin's proposal includes instituting an age limit of 20 years and older for participants and providing medical treatment options for those struggling with addiction.

 

Support for the proposal has emerged from the Thai government, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Mr. Prasert Chantharungthong, recognising the social issues stemming from online gambling. Mr. Prasert noted the potential economic benefits through tax revenue and urged an examination of legal adjustments necessary for regulation.

 

 

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is reportedly working on legislative proposals to bring Mr. Thaksin's vision to fruition. However, Mr. Prasert emphasised that further discussions are required on implementing age restrictions and addiction treatments.

I think the best way to discourage poorer thais from visiting casinos and betting their lives away would be to charge them a flat entrance fee of 5,000 baht per head...

Unfortunately a lot of the new generation(s) gamble online, available 24 hours a day. And many lose not just a few baht but mass large debts, borrowing from relatives and loan sharks.

It's a kind of unseen disease, the gambler doesn't rapidly lose his/ her looks ( until the loan sharks sorts them out), unlike the methamphetamine and serious lao khao consumers who show obvious signs of wear and tear after a while.

As you say online gambling is available 24/7.. no need to go to a casino for the average Joe...

just the Hi-so's will hang-out there to be seen..... mingling with the Chinese and others who want to be noticed.

And it's very possible the same thing would happen here that happened in Cambodia. Massive casinos would be built and the administration would change and the law would change and billions upon billions of dollars would be lost.
