I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Being a taxi driver in BKK could be the definition of madness.

Terrible income, stress all the time, terrible environmental conditions...

No wonder some of them are flipping.

Yes, terrible income because they refuse to take passengers by metered fare while hoping to make a catch of the day finding some idiot paying their inflated fixed rates. On the other hand I've never heard grab taxi drivers complaining about their income 😁

Book him and let the court find out, if it was attempted manslaughter or attempted murder - should state an example for the rest of the taxi mafia.

But, like everything else in this country - no/very poor law enforcement for the (usual) beneficial financial success in the law-and-order league!

For some of them it is not about the money, but an attempt to gain some superiority over someone else. A power play.

We see this in Thai culture often, demanding deference or respect to the person further up the food chain.

Other examples of this behaviour can include gibbering on in Thai when they have a foreigner they think cannot understand in the cab, taking alternative routes other than the one requested by the passenger (because they apparently know better than the GPS or the passenger), and lewd/rapey behaviour when they have a woman in the cab.

The punishment should be more severe due to the impact on the country's image.

The punishment should not be affected by the country's image.  One would hope it would punished the same irrelevant of the country's image, age, race or gender of the parties involved.

Probably over dramatized as all we t to police station none to hospital. Nevertheless

From the OP...

"The Bangkok Post reported that the attack left a wound more than 10 centimetres long on the face. The injured man told reporters that the gash required 32 stitches".

Do you think that he did the 32 stitches himself?

Tourist "Be aware" another Thai nut job !!

No foreign tourists involved in this, very isolated, unjustified incident that was provoked by the passenger.

Don't ask why all these incidents involve taxis and not Grab vehicles 😳😉

Many Grab vehicles are taxis.   This type of incident generally does not happen because the destination and fare is agreed in advance and it will always be more than a normal taxi fare.

Conditions that the drivers voluntarily accept, no one forces the job, or conditions, on them.

According to reports, the incident happened in Silom area early Saturday morning when a group of three men and a woman hailed the taxi and asked the driver to take them to Thong Lor area.

When the driver refused to go because of traffic congestion, one of the passengers reportedly slammed the passenger door to express frustration.

The angered driver then jumped out of his cab and an argument ensued. The taxi driver drew a fruit knife and slashed the face of the man who slammed the door.

The driver must be a highly sensitive person not the ideal person to be involved with the public !!!!

No.  The passenger slammed the car door in response to the driver's refusal to serve his group.

Arguing with a taxi driver probably isn't the smartest thing to do.  I wonder what this was all about?  The amount of the fare?

The passenger slammed the car door in response to the driver's refusal to serve his group.

The solution is simple. Follow China's example. Have every taxi with a camera in their car. This would make it easier to check all incidents from authorities. Penalty for not having a camera on, or it not working is just as valid as admitting guilt to any issue and further consequences (like having a license removed) should be implemented.

But they won't do that will they.

Many Bangkok taxis do have cameras.

Thankfully, the taxi driver is a dying profession.

Ride hailing apps are taking over, and soon self-driving vehicles will negate the need for any human interaction whatsoever, eliminating incidents like this.

Cobblers.

I'd like to know what he did to upset the taxi driver.

The passengers were Thais and one of then forcibly slammed the taxi door when refused a ride.

The meter for cab drivers in Thailand is kryptonite.

They don't do that for the Meters either - so having such a rule for camera use to catch cheats and scammers is going to be ignored to an equal degree.

The best solution to any of these issues is outlined below.

And... this best solution, is also the best solution for so many of Thailands issues - ineffective and lazy policing has such an 'enabling' knock-on effect...

The cops should randomly pull taxis over and check for weapons.

Very common knowledge drivers carry all sorts of weapons. Iron bars come quickly to mind.

Whatever the reason for the quarrel, slashing a man’s face, 32 stitches, is certainly not normal anger. I’m glad to see the onlookers stepped in stop the driver disappearing.

Grab drivers don't drive around looking for customers , they just sit at home waiting for a call  , they aren't on the road all day

Of course they are on the road all day how do you think they come so quickly. If they were at home they couldn’t respond quickly they don’t all live locally.

They stay at home and respond to calls close to them .

If the customer is too far away, they then don't accept the job .

Why would they drive around all day waiting for a message on their phone , they may as well sit at home waiting for that message .

No customer  will stop them when they are driving around , so it would be pointless driving around

Very dumb and insensitive way of reasoning.

I wish you to end up in the same kind of crap.

You might learn a thing or two about decency.

Because it's hard to prove the meter was off once a passenger has left. In this instance if a report is made, the authorities can demand to see the video of day. If they can't produce a video it's a good as guilt.

In China there are regular stops to make sure taxi drivers have their videos on. If not, they are banned .

Has to be psychological.

Numerous drivers refuse to use meter, then continue on the same path i was going for 15 minutes with an empty cab. Why ?

just another low life taxi driver ... plenty of them here.

I hope he's fined and jailed.   :burp:

Yes.

And, it sounds like the victim will most probably carry a major scar on his face for the rest of his life. I think that there should be an extra, heavy punishment (on top of the regular 'causing injury' charge) for such an attack. I mean, one that causes permanent or long-term damage to the body.
