All six were in Thailand on tourist visas, which permit travel, business dealings, and short-term work for up to 60 days. It's noted that their visas remain valid.

 

This incident underscores the stringent regulations surrounding drug possession in Thailand, where laws are enforced rigorously to curb the use and distribution of controlled substances.

 

Cannabis, although legalised for medical use, requires permits for sale, which the men were unable to produce for the significant quantity found.

 

The arrests highlight ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to maintain strict control over drug-related activities within the tourist-popular region. As the judicial process proceeds, these individuals will face charges pertinent to the unauthorised possession and potential intent to distribute these substances.

If you’re a user or growing for personal use, you now have to be careful about how much cannabis you keep in your possession or risk being accused of illegal distribution?

 

While most individual users wouldn’t typically have 6 kilos on hand, in this case, it was six people, which comes out to roughly one kilo per person. Given how inexpensive cannabis has become in Thailand, it’s not unrealistic for someone to have at least a few hundred grams on hand for personal use. The question is, where exactly is the line drawn now between personal use and distribution?

 

Also, why were these individuals even suspected of selling? Was there any solid evidence, or is this just an assumption based on the amount they possessed? Even if they were selling, how could six people working out of an apartment possibly compete with the hundreds of licensed dispensaries on the island? Who would their customers be? Are they thought to be walking around beaches or bars and offering cannabis to random tourists when legal shops are practically everywhere? And realistically, who would buy from a random foreigner on the street when legal, local, trusted options are so accessible? It doesn’t seem to make much sense.

 

It’s more plausible that the real issue here is competition with local interests. This might have less to do with drug charges and more to do with the ongoing narrative of foreigners working illegally or cutting into Thai businesses’ profits.

 

Interestingly, I haven’t heard of anyone else being jailed for cannabis related offenses since it was decriminalized in June 2022. Even selling without a license doesn’t seem to draw much attention, provided the right people are paid off. Just look at the dozens of street vendors on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok or in Pattaya late at night, many of whom are Pakistani or Bangladeshi, openly selling weed to tourists. These vendors are clearly competing with licensed shops and local interests, yet nobody seems to crack down on them. Why? Because they’re operating within a system that involves unofficial payments to stay in business? This makes the situation with these six individuals even harder to understand.

The country  would have collapsed many long years ago without immigration from the lands it previously colonised.

When Brits like me travel to Thailand we are the foreigners. Bloody bleeding heart woolly liberals like me shouldn't be allowed visas, only those with the St George Cross hanging from their Pattaya balconies.
