Unfortunately I think he is already back with us as of today as "Elvis Presley", of all user names. Well, he did tell us he is a big Elvis fan in the past, so it makes perfect sense.

Watching my Father suffer through Cancer before he died.

 

Father was smart, hardworking, caring, successful businessman and friend to many.

 

After couple months of Cancer drugs:

1. Lost some teeth 

2. Couldn't add simple numbers when he is excellent at Math

3. Needed a feeding tube

4. Drugs making him unstable and needing wheelchair.

5. Depression, watching him battle and fight back but inside knowing he can't win.  Accepting death, leaving his family and friends took a heavy toll.

 

What did I learn?

Appreciate the time I have and don't waste it.

Helping people is very rewarding to both parties.

There are somethings you have Zero control over, it is best to just focus on living a good, happy life, not waste time and efforts when there is no benefit or result.

Today I was supposed to meet up with GG at a gay bar in Chiang Mai for a few drinks and maybe some Brokeback. He never showed up. I was there in bells. He didn't even give a courtesy call to say he wasn't coming. I was heart broken. Almost killed myself.

I'm 67 pretty healthy and still working as a Chef... I could potentially see hard times ahead... Made some bad decisions a few years ago starting from scratch so to speak twice.. Not much cash.. But could make it up very fast.. Now living in Texas and EVERYWHERE is so expensive.. But I had a great life traveling and working in Thailand and SE Asia.. and if I had 3 months to live I could deal with it..

I've just turned 67. Against my wishes, I brought a Japanese wife back to Canada after a wonderful decade in Tokyo during the Eighties - once in Canuckistan, I had big problems matching my previous salary, but she had no problem spending like a drunken sailor, eventually culminating in a huge fight that featured her smashing several heavily framed old Ukioye prints over my head. That was the lowest point for me.

 

After we split up, I went to Grad school and returned to work in Singapore for a couple of decades, ultimately ending up here in Chiang Rai with a wonderful lady I've been with thirty years. None of this would have occurred without the big breakup, and I'd be back in Montreal, shivering.

Pretty low and rough times for awhile.

 

How about you ?, what was your roughest or lowest time for you as a young adult, or maybe you hit bottom at another time ?

The "worst" time of my life was in 1985.
The Belgian Government decided to close the Coalmines (I was working in a coalmine at that time) and the coalminers went into a strike.
Beating up the "Rat's" who were trying to sneak past the strike posts to go to work.
As the strike was not supported by the Union's, we did not received a penny from the Union.
The coalmine was not paying a salary as well as we were on strike.
As the strike went on and most of us had no money to keep supporting a family and pay the bill's, many coalminers wife's went into a divorce, creating additional suffering and misery.
I was sentenced to pay about 250 USD alimony for my children whilst I had no income at all.
The only food and clothes we had were donated by the local shops who supported the strike.
Luckily, after the rain came the sunshine, and in 1986 the coalminers received a "big" sum of money, and the possibility to be relocated to other jobs. 
That was a year where I saw "Black Snow".
Many coalminers commited suicide while in that situation.

Worst was 1980-1981. I had just been made redundant from my job in Australia (reasons would be a post on its own, but basically my specialism was no longer required after mining plans were changed); i enjoyed a nice long holiday ended up back in the UK, where i thought with my recent experience in environmental monitoring i would at last get  the job i was looking for with the water authorities.

 

How wrong I was! The new Thatcher administration did a hatchet job on the economy (and the water authorities),  and i spent 18 months unemployed. No-one would employ a scientist to do mundane retail jobs; there where plenty of less educated people for that. Also house was burgled (twice), the insurance company refused to renew my insurance; housemate got mugged, and 2 race riots took place within one mile of me. Strikes happening all the time. When i did finally get a job (as a civil servant), had to do a 6 week IT course which I struggled with for a while. Then we had one of the worst winters on record in 1981 and my house (empty at the time) suffered severe damage from freezing and snow - pipes burst, toilet cracked, and water penetrated the walls causing massive mould problems. House was for sale at the time and i had to take a loss as no-one would buy it in a riot zone.

 

If not for fishing and my savings from the Australian work to live on, I would have got utterly depressed.
