Destination Thailand Visa Extension requirements posted on Immigration website

Featured Replies

At first glance, the requirements for extending at Immigration look very similar to the initial application process.

In a perfect world, one could simply resubmit all the documents that were used to obtain the original visa BUT.....

i) the time has moved on anything up to 5 years so the documents could be deemed 'out of date'.

ii) the scrutinising authority is Immigration rather than an embassy so a very different take on what is acceptable or not could be applied.

iii) as this is being done at Immigration, one would expect everything will have to be in paper format rather than online.

It can all theoretically be avoided by leaving the country before the 180-day permission to stay expires.

Good luck on getting up-to-date paper copies of some documents once in Thailand.

Just so everyone understands that is a mistake where it says 5000,000 baht for the financials (as in it's NOT 5 million baht) it's only 500K baht 😛

Maybe Immigration needs to add English-language proofreaders an acceptable category for DTV applicants!  🙂

Ok so you plan to obtain a DTV.

The report is regarding a friend.

"Dental" will be soft power category.

Extension process may be different.

Out of interest what proof did will you need to supply re dental work.

I already Have DTV (stamped until 3rd of March).
As someone mentioned it'll probably be easier to avoid all this mess and just spend a weekend in KL or P-P or Singapore. I have bank statement and dental appointment for 8th of March, just in case to show at the airport.

I'm thinking some folk confused how a dental appointment in March can facilitate a 5 yr visa.

Agree that an exit/reenter best plan.

Why does immigration even require an electricity payment slip and rental payment slip? How is that relevant to extending a DTV?

Because they can? Impose any rules they want.
Look for item #5 for remote work 'Proof of rental and payment ...'
Doesn't say electricity but ..

Guy said he went there a few times, every time new document was required.
By the end of the day he was living near the printer and xerox machines)

Probably to create a bureaucratic obstacle which then can be resolved by agents. Or so I expect.

Don't forget......blue ink for all official forms.

Hey everyone 👋

I wanted to share my experience extending my DTV visa at the Phuket Town Immigration Office this week. Before diving in though, I’d like to thank @Tod Daniels and @Tim K for sharing helpful details on the required documents in this thread. After reading others’ reports on this forum and elsewhere, I was a bit worried about my chances. In the end, though, the process turned out to be smooth and easy.

My Situation

It’s the same as when I got my DTV visa (check here) back in September. I'm a non-EU, non-US remote worker for an western IT company, and I only had a few days left before my first 180 days would expire.

Required Documents

I didn't know what exact documents I would need to provide in the Immigration Office so just in case I prepared all kinds of them after reading others' reports. In the end, it turned out that only a subset of them were sufficient. Here is the list of the documents that I was asked to present (each paper sheet must be signed by you):

  • Passport

  • Bank Statement
Covering the last 31 days starting the day of your visit to the Immigration Office. Must include a list of transactions. The balance should not fall below 500,000 THB (or equivalent in a foreign currency) on any day. I used my Wise bank account and I did not need to show my balance on my phone.

  • Proof of Bank Account Ownership.
    Standard document provided by Wise.

  • Rental Agreement

  • Certification of Employment

  • Employment Contract

  • TM30 Form
I was told that the check-out date must not be blank and must match the rental agreement's end date (a special requirement for a DTV visa).

  • Copy of the TM47 Receipt

  • TM7 Form.
Visa type: DTV. Extension period: 180 days. Reason: Telework. Must have your photo glued in and your telephone number mentioned.

  • Copies of Passport Pages:

    • Page with your photo
    • Page with your DTV visa
    • Page with the entry stamp
  • Google Maps Screenshot.
Satellite view with a pinpoint of your home. Must explicitly show the longitude and latitude (you can write them yourself).

  • 1,900 THB in Cash

Visit

I arrived at around 9:30 a.m. and headed first to room 101, where I waited around 40 minutes in line for the volunteer receptionist to get my ticket. When it was my turn, he carefully examined my documents and noted that my TM30 form should list the rental contract’s end date as the check-out date—this is required for my DTV visa. He let me pass, advising that I correct it next time.

After receiving my ticket, I waited another 30 minutes until I was called by an officer. She quickly noticed that my case wasn’t a standard 30-day extension and passed my documents to the shift chief officer for verification. He examined everything thoroughly and ultimately rejected my application because my bank statement covered only  February N to March N (28 days), instead of the required 31 days (which would be February N – 3 days to March N). However, they said that was the only issue, and once I provide an updated statement, I should be good.

Additionally, the officer at the counter requested a Google Maps screenshot of my home with coordinates (this was important). Luckily, I had it prepared and handed it over. They told me I didn't have to wait in line for the updated bank statement; I could just go to the counter when I was ready.

Thankfully, it was very easy to get a new statement through the Wise app. I requested a new statement with the required dates and printed it out in the office print shop. I returned to the counter with the updated statement, which they rechecked and accepted. They then took my passport and told me to come back in two days for pickup, as the Chief Officer needed to sign off on my long extension.

Two days later, I went straight to counter 6, identified myself, and they returned my passport with a 180-day extension!

Overall, the visit took about 2 hours, and I spent more than half that time waiting in line. It felt like a routine visa extension procedure. The officers weren't particularly picky—they smiled and joked around, occasionally giving me ambiguous looks.

I hope this report helps someone out. Good luck!

1st of March I went to Phnom Penh and back on 5th.
Everything went well, went to the movies, walked around. Except that on my return to Don Mueang Airport (DMK) I got pulled out by the IO to the special zone for naughty farangs. Thing is they really get in a frenzy after seeing the ED visa. To make things worse DMK was swamped by tourists and the queue (snake-shaped) to the officer was 40minutes long. And time was running out for me to get to my 2nd flight from DMK to Phuket.
After 20 minutes of waiting and not knowing what the problem is I was really getting nervous.
Usual stories were heard - coming too many times   where is your visa
We dont' decide you get to stay or not - if the Embassy gives you visa we'll stamp you in  if not - sorry.
Get a non-o,    get a DTV ( yeah right )

One guy was with his Thai GF, and they were saying to him: "We're very sorry sir but you can not get in this time. Please go back to Phnom Penh and get a DTV. After that you can stay long time if you're not getting married"
I almost chuckled when the IO said this.  She had both  his and mine passport in her hand, and mine had DTV, and I still got pulled out.

So my passport got handed over to another IO about 5 times and then they called me and asked me if I had a hotel booked. (WHY??)  I said I rent a house.
What is the address?
- Here's my DL with that address.
- Oh, Phuket?! OK stamp him in.
After got my stamp I asked if I would have any problems the next time?!
- No, no problems.

Well if Phuket Imm. Office doesn't require electricity bills and rental payment slips
maybe I'll try it in September. But I don't have a contract, do they really need photo of me in a dentist's chair?
Does my face have to express pain during the procedures?)

It's not stressful to show all these paperworks every time you need to extend a DTV? Does it really make sense if you already got a visa approved for 5 years?

I was thinking about getting a DTV but hell no. Getting pulled aside for 30 min every time you re enter the country no thanks. And this is the first visa run you did so it will only get worse over time as more people do this and they dont like repeat visa runs/border runs to continue a stay. As always with these type of visas its not a permission to stay 5 years straight, its basically just a multiple entry tourist visa where you may or may not be allowed to enter each time depending on officer discretion.

I certainly wasn’t pulled aside when I initially entered or re-entered. Sailed straight through with no questions and that seems to be the case with most people.

Reports seem to indicate that getting a DTV in a regional embassy might make you more likely to be questioned vs obtaining in home country.

No idea if any other factors in play:

- Soft power vs remote worker

- Length of time out of country

- Previous visa history

- IO having a bad day

I certainly hope I can jump in / out for the five years!

I’m always a little sceptical about a vocal minority that have bad experiences:

- Do they have connections to “safe entry” services?

- Are they just bored and looking for reaction?

- Are they jealous of remote workers because they had to work down a coal mine for 40 years?

All the reports of questioning at airports by Immigration SO FAR have related to those obtaining DTV's in the ASEAN region rather than in the home countries.

I have not come across any denials of entry SO FAR.

I have been following this closely. So not too bad SO FAR but there is only one way this is going to go as the entry stamps stack up.

If I can get 18 months out of my DTV (obtained in London), okay I have got my money's worth.

There are a few differences between what Jomtien Immigration's list of documents required for a DTV extension was given to me today and what the Russian guy said. Please see attached the required documents. As you can see, it's quite an extensive list and it's different from what other provinces require. Why does each province have different document requirements for extensions? Also, Jomtien has said again (last time was for METV extensions) that you can only extend a DTV 7 days prior to stamp expiry. This was the same requirement that was previously set for METV that only 7 days prior you were allowed to extend METVs.

Seems that a border bounce would be easier, as if you are only allowed 7 days prior, you may get rejected then need to scramble as you will only have a few days left to organise a border bounce. Regarding border bounces, are you allowed to go and come back the same day on a DTV and does it matter if you border bounce via air or via a van company?

That should be fine. Most of the borders that require 1-2 nights stay, are for those bouncing on visa exempt.  Having a visa should bypass that requirement. Though I would suggest avoiding Poipet regardless of your circumstances.
