I've had internet speed problems this week so had True engineer call and changed my modem after tests. My subscription is for 500 GB which I am happy with so no suggestions about changing to fibre etc as not necessary.

Speed tests on my laptop and mobile show around 500 gb. Speed test on my android boxes (I tried 2) show around 30 gb.

The boxes are fairly modern, eg X96 , 4gb, 64 gb, android 14.

So what are the limitations that are preventing the box achieving higher speeds ?

I normally just look for latest android version and reasonable gb, next time I will get 8gb minimum but at the time of purchaes many boxes were offering only 2gb which I realise is too slow.

Is there other spec I should be looking at like CPU or processor ?

No.

The things that dictate the speed of the connection the box can handle are WiFi 5 or 6 and 1000M LAN. Neither of which that box can achieve,

I guess you mean Mbps.

The reason to spend more on a MECOOL box is for Widevine Level 1. In short, if you have a subscription for NetFlix HD and the like. Boxes without it can only show NetFlix in Standard Definition

That is the sole reason why people pay more for a MeCool. If you don't want NetFlix, Amazon Prime etc then spend the extra on a higher spec box. But do you really need it?

I guess you are using WiFi to connect to the internet?

try connect an Ethernet cable directly from router to the X96 and do a speed test

then you will know that the box’s WiFi chipset / antenna is of low quality.

I use an Nvidia Shield, they’re expensive, but even after many years without update, are still regarded as one of, if not the top home streaming box

Is your box connected via 2.4GHz WiFi, 5GHz WiFi or Ethernet LAN?

At 500Mbps, you are already connected via Fibre.

5g and it's not fibre as far as I am aware as I've never upgraded it.

You can not get 500Mbps unless you have fibre. VDSL caps out on about 100 Mbps max, ADSL about half of that, but I don't think ADSL is still used.

2gb or 8Gb is the RAM, has nothing to do with speed, and 8GB speed doesn't exist in Thailand.

And here you say it has 4GB RAM.

If you have an old smartphone spare can use that instead of a box and cast to your TV, that's what i do, much better specs than an 800 baht box

Thanks but I don't want to cast.

I also use it to play downloaded stuff on my usb stick.

I'm after an android box.

If you want something equal to Minix, look for a box with S922 or S928 processor.

Stay clear of anything with S905X4 processor, e.g. The Mecool KM2 Plus and KM2 Pus deluxe, as well as boxes running Android TV 12 (KM2)

Budget and requirement? Do you use official services such a Netflix and Amazon Prime or just use independent sources?

The answer will dictate if you need Widevine DRM Level 1.

They do make the U8K-ULTRA. Though it's a bit expensive. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007691753795.html

I mainly use it to watch AFL (Australian Football League) on a licenced app.

Occasionally use it to stream live cricket.

Other than that, just watch my downloaded material from my usb stick via VLC.

Don't watch Netflix or Amazon.

Budget around 5000 to 6000 Baht would be preferable.

Thanks again.

My tox 3 box speedtest gets around 300Mbps on both lan and wifi connections to an ax router. The tox 3 has gigabit lan and ac wifi. My internet connection is 400mbps.

Available from lazada and shopee and AliExpress. Cheaper from AliExpress, takes a bit over a week. There's a tox 4 model which I also have but the 3 is more stable so I'd avoid the 4. Regular upgrades from the manufacturer. Get a g20s pro bt remote with it as the standard ir one is <deleted>e.

Seems a lot of money for such simple needs. In that case you'd be fine with an S905X4.

What is the licenced App?

There is a lot of expectations from the internet with providers telling you they have the fastest system. What they fail to tell you is that you probably will never get even near the maximum speed they quote and I will tell you why. They are not lying but they are somewhat economical with the reality.

When you connect to any site you are going through a significant number of switches in the network. The fastest speed you will ever get is the slowest speed of any link within the system. The providers may upgrade their network to be super fast, but unfortunately the rest of the world doesn't do that.

If you want an analogue analogy consider pouring water through a pipe. A 6" pipe will get the water through a lot faster than a 1" pipe. It is the same with networks. You will only be as fast as the slowest portion on the network that you connect through.

I know some people here will say they have had really fast connections and I am sure they have but connect to the same site the next day and it be be akin to a snail. Each time you connect you are not necessarily going to use the same route and even if you are the use by others of that route will vary.

Seems weird to get some "whatever" putting up a laughing Emojy, takes all sorts I guess and they are certainly on AN!

I watch live golf and Rugby which I like. Apps that provide access to Aussie football , cricket , American baseball etc. for those with other preferences

Watch most of the new movies, documentaries ,TV  shows etc.

Basically everything the average person would want to watch.

Currently TX6 783 baht on Lazada

No additional costs. Now that is really funny!

I'm pretty sure My Minix was around that price quite a long time ago now.

I just want something decent that will do the job and I thought that was pretty much the going price of anything decent.

The website, App is WatchAFL.

It's a paid subscription.

I chucked my Minix and replaced it with a mecool km2 plus and it was well worth the upgrade.

I've got a Minix Neo X8-H Plus as a backup which is older than the hills but still runs my apps to my satisfaction.  I recently had to update from Android 4 to 5 to keep everything running but I still hope to get a while out if it yet.  Redbox TV and Live Net TV are my main apps.
