  • NO, you can't do it on $333 in TH, or more like, you really wouldn't want to.   We lived on about $360 a month last year ... BUT ... we are all bought in.   ... no rent ... no electric

  • Why would anyone want to do it?

I do have an online teaching income, but my UK state pension allows me to rent a nice studio at Jomtien Beach AND a country property in the hills/mountain of north Thailand with 2 rai of land.... and the rental price for both totals 13,000 baht/month.

nice. where at? rentals in remote areas can be hard to find.

Why have you been to a lot of 3rd world countries? The people who succeeded in life don't do that... unless you are Angelina Jolie with look at me agenda

no house. Just pay rent, 8000/month and my wife has a company supplied townhouse in the city I can use when I need to. Simple life. That's Thailand and how we all live.

For Americans basically everyone is going to get SOME SS. Not sure what the minimum amount is but it should take you to $1000/month along with your measly $333.

But this can't be right. $50/month? That's enough to buy enough gas to drive to McDonalds for a cheese burger. I was guessing it would be like $700 or so.

I worked exactly 40 quarters in the US. My social security is a bit over $2200.

I never heard of company supplied townhouse. Companies here are very stingy.

And most Thai women get fired as soon as they hit 40

This company is an older one started in the 1940s and has branches all over the country. Not only do Thai women get fired at 40 they get mandatory pay raises until forced retirement at 60, seen multiple women retire already over the last 10 years.

These companies are going to extinct though and the new generations are probably going in the direction of cut throat American style with few perks and quick to lay off. I know very little about this though.

These are not good houses. Just a simple 2 story town house, at least in Chiang Mai. The more senior people have a couple nice 2 story houses. There's also a couple crappy wooden houses. I've seen the housing in Chiang Rai and it's all different style/quality.

I read yesterday there's a gradient where the longer you work the smaller the increments are. So a person working 11 years isn't getting 25% of a person working 40 years, less but not proportional to the years worked.  It's not really a savings account like they pass it off as, more of a tax payer funded subsidy. My limited understanding at least.

No. This is a thread of desperation of poor folks who never had success and should never leave their home country.

I believe he, like myself, considers it a 'success' to be financially able to chose which 'craphole' you wish to live at.

There is a difference between choosing to live somewhere and having to live somewhere, because of your success, or lack of, being financially successful.

The location is simply that.   You can live comfy or struggle in any location.  If all one can afford is your home country, with free-ish universal healthcare, the one should stay there.

I you want and can afford better, then the choices are endless.

He may have chosen that way. But I don't see any billionaires in Thailand. So for him to bark crap like he failed in life because he lives on this budget is quite telling.

Anyway, personally I always said that living on a tight budget is a mistake in almost any country, not just Thailand. This country is not even "Thai Friendly" let alone foreign friendly.

Numerous medical emergencies and GoFundMe beggars prove that.

I've seen some nonsense on YouTube and this up there. HIs plan is have 100k USD and use the 4% rule which allows to use 4% of the money and this will be enough to get you through (or returns from investments).

So this is $4000/year or $333/month. He has some great suggestions like Cambodia, Egypt and India. Even in Thailand you have just a few thousand more than a minimum worker and you're pretty much screwed. Rent probably can't exceed 2000-3000 baht so single room row houses with fans will be where you're sleeping and eating most of your meals out of a bag from the market and cooking rice at home.

I think Cambodia is hardly any better but maybe India will work. Funny he leaves out Africa which is out of the question although no doubt the cheapest. Egypt he says is a Muslim country but liberal! Looks like hell on earth to me though.

People are getting desperate out there I guess. Boomers are retiring in earnest now and many finding themselves in such a position but this guy is selling false dreams if you ask me. This retirement is going to be far worse than he's letting on and could trick some poor souls.

$100,000 in passive annual income, should be doable.

"for him to bark crap like he failed in life because he lives on this budget"

... I missed that part

"This country is not even "Thai Friendly" let alone foreign friendly."

... that again comes down to choices, and who you engage with, along with probably, where you live.  I've lived in 6 different houses, locations here, and have had little to no problems with the locals.   Can't say the same back in the USA, though very few there also, and may be my own doing, as I did like my music loud.

Also depends how 'social' you are or not.  I find what one projects is usually what one receives.  From all interactions with people, neighbors, vendors, strangers.

Not sure what medical oops of GoFundMe has to do with TH, or any location.   More about those needing, and usually ignorant, borderline stupid (to be nice) tourist, or less fortunate people living in a non-universal healthcare country.

who's "barking crap"? People live on budgets for many reasons. Almost no one is in Thailand because they have infinite money and after visiting every country in the world they chose Thailand as the clear winner. Even so even wealthy people can enjoy traveling in Thailand but probably wouldn't choose to live here 12 months of the year.

The endeavour by the Thai government to attract foreigners – and therefore money – has completely backfired as the country is flooded with farangs who spend less than Thais.

Sure, living in Isaan at my wife's farm, I could quite easily exist on this amount even nowadays. Life would indeed not much different from the Thais around me, and many of them are happy.

But would I ever want to?

Frankly, I am not really good at farm work in the blazing sun. And on that amount (and without the free health insurance that the Thais have), I better would never, ever get sick with anything. No car, so it would limit my mobility in the extreme.

As I was a lot younger, travelling the world, I lived on similar amounts in Kenya, Sri Lanka and later in Phuket and thought it plenty... but always in the knowledge, that I would have much bigger spending capabilities whenever I needed. Living on this amount as a planned outcome and with no Plan B would be a nightmare.

company provided? that's pretty good then. They have a branch in Bangkok but it's hardly better. This company started in the 40s when BKK was tiny compared today and has a pretty good chunk of land in the city they could probably sell and make a killing.

This is true. Isaan like many parts of the country simply doesn't have much stuff to buy which is good in my opinion. I don't spend much because I don't have anything I need to buy and don't want to run around to restaurants all the time. What else can I do with my money here?

Having a fat bank account is nice so if I really need to buy something like a new computer or vehicle I can do that in cash.

Yeah part of my salary package, Australian company.

20 years ago when I came here and fell in love with the place, I looked at what monthly cash flow I would need for a nice living then tripled it. So far that has served me well and I expect it to for my remaining days.

$333 USD/month means a lot of Mama's noodles, fish head soup, and a ratty room with no aircon. ไม่ ขอบคุณ

Yes, as long as you don't get sick, hungry and like to sleep inside.

It is rather sad...

My daughter has a company supplied condo in Nakon Sawan.

Plenty of factories, builders and workshops also provide housing for their workforce.
