Starmer Urges Zelensky to Reconcile with Trump, but Tensions Remain High

Sir Keir Starmer attempted to mediate the escalating tensions between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump following their fiery confrontation in the Oval Office. After the public fallout, which saw Trump accusing Zelensky of "gambling with World War Three" and being "disrespectful" to America before ejecting the Ukrainian delegation from the White House, the UK Prime Minister reached out in an effort to mend relations.

It has emerged that later that evening, Starmer personally called Zelensky, urging him to return to the White House and repair the strained relationship with Trump. He then made a separate call to Trump in an attempt to ease tensions. However, his peacemaking efforts were unsuccessful, as American officials conveyed that the situation remained too volatile for any immediate return to negotiations.

Zelensky is now facing mounting pressure from European leaders to make amends with Trump. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also advised the Ukrainian president to seek a rapprochement. "I said: I think you have to find a way, dear Volodymyr, to restore your relationship with Donald Trump and the American administration. That is important going forward," Rutte told the BBC. He reminded Zelensky that it was Trump who provided Javelin anti-tank weapons to Kyiv in 2019, a move that helped Ukraine resist Russia's aggression.

"Without the Javelins in 2022, when the full-scale attack started, Ukraine would have been nowhere," Rutte emphasized. "I told him we really have to give Trump credit for what he did then, what America did since then and also what America is still doing." He refrained from commenting directly on Trump’s harsh words to Zelensky but insisted, "I am absolutely convinced that the US wants to bring Ukraine to this durable peace. What they need to get there is to make sure that we’ll all work together on this."

Zelensky, for his part, appeared to acknowledge the difficult position he now finds himself in. Expressing regret over how the White House talks unraveled, he stressed the importance of securing Trump’s support. "We are ready to sign the minerals agreement, and it will be the first step toward security guarantees. But it’s not enough, and we need more than just that. A ceasefire without security guarantees is dangerous for Ukraine. We’ve been fighting for three years, and Ukrainian people need to know that America is on our side," he said.

Despite Starmer's intervention and the advice from European allies, it remains unclear whether Zelensky and Trump can move past the diplomatic clash.

Well, you have to decide which Zelensky is.  According to Mama Beeb, he is still willing to sign the mining deal with the US.

I have a feeling that some of Zelensky's more clever advisors got in his ear during the trans-Atlantic flight and basically told him that he screwed the pooch.  Meeting Starmer was lovely, but our Piers only promised him 1% of the aid that the US could give.

Ukraine used to part of Austria and Poland plus others. Kind of a made up country.

What has that got to do with its recognised sovereignty status now............?  🙄

CNN and other major media are today carrying video clips on their youtube channels giving us a glimpse of the 19 or so European and transatlantic leaders who gathered in London to discuss with Volodymyr Zelensky how to continue their cooperation in defense of Ukraine following the debacle in the White House in Washington yesterday, when Zelensky was humiliated before the television cameras and was shown to the door. Among the 19 whom I counted when they posed for the obligatory group photo were  Emmanuel Macron, Donald Tusk, Georgia Meloni, Justin Trudeau, Mark Rutte, Ursula von der Leyen.

In the few introductory words delivered by Keir Starmer, we heard that their common mission is to provide for European security, in which defending Ukraine plays a vital role. They seemingly wish to arrive at a common position on defending Ukraine that they will later present to Washington.

The problem with this is that they are knowingly running directly against the now crystal clear position of Donald Trump to wash his hands of Zelensky and to allow the Russians to finish up this war as they see best. The U.S. is about to cut off shipments of arms prepared by Biden in his last days and will surely not send any further weapons to Kiev out of its current budget.

It is utterly bizarre that these stubborn Europeans think that they have some leverage with Trump. Their blindness is not merely to the obvious fact that absent the participation of the USA in the war effort consisting of materiel, money and critically important satellite intelligence to guide battlefield operations, the Ukrainian forces have no chance whatsoever of standing up to Russia.  Europe’s possible aid will solve nothing.

More to the point, when they speak of European security, they overlook the fact that without vibrant U.S. participation in NATO, NATO can fold its tents since it will be nonfunctional. It lacks the air lift, the armaments manufacturing capacity, most everything to sustain a war that will last more than a few days.

By their present gathering, these leaders are setting the stage for a U.S. pull-out from NATO.  They forget how the United States under any president, not just Donald J. Trump, reacts to defiance from allies.  Just think back to 2003 when Germany, France and Belgium had the temerity to veto the U.S. drafted resolution before the UN Security Council approving the planned invasion of Iraq over alleged weapons of mass destruction.  Within days, French wines were being poured out into the gutters, French fries were renamed ‘freedom fries’ and there was outrage and indignation across the land.  No less will result from the stupid, pig-headed action of these European heads of government in London today.

As for Keir Starmer, he must be the stupidest of the lot.  When in Washington meeting with Donald Trump, he was offered a tariff free trade deal with the USA that his country has sought ever since Brexit. He failed to see that this was the deal:  you get tariff free trade if you just shut up about Ukraine.  But shut up this oaf could not do.  As they say in Washington, there now will be consequences.
On related news of the day, it appears that King Charles today gave an audience to his good friend Volodymyr Zelensky.  And does he still expect Donald Trump to come calling for the state visit and private dinner with the King that Starmer delivered during his visit?

"The problem with this is that they are knowingly running directly against the now crystal clear position of Donald Trump to wash his hands of Zelensky ..."  Not a proven fact, Just your opinion, nothing more.

Ukraine has massive deposits of rare earths, lithium etc., etc., extremely valuable to the US.

Trump would be way out of line in his responsibilities to the US if he let access to that slip away because of his massive ego.

Who but a fascist or insane person would accept billions in money and military support from Donald Trump?

I watched the entire 46 minute interview and I do have to admit that Zelensky was unusually direct and unusually critical of Trump. However nothing that he said was untrue and what he said was quite accurate. The problem was that Trump is not accustomed to being confronted and though Trump and Vance likely set up the oval office interview as a way to ambush Zelensky, in the end Zelensky ended up ambushing Trump and Vance. He made them both lose their cool, and they looked utterly foolish on the world stage.

It was probably not smart for him to mouth off to Trump like that, as he knew it wouldn't end well, but my presumption is that he had no interest in giving away half of Ukraine's mineral wealth which is worth over a trillion dollars, in exchange for the repayment of $130 billion dollars worth debt. It was a very bad deal for Ukraine and I think Zelensky played it smart. He is likely garnering tremendous sympathy around the world and my guess is that the EU and other nations will step in and take the place of the US in terms of aid to Ukraine. In return us influence is diminishing by the day, but that's just big Don isn't it?

The goon squad are in the process of engaging in damage repair right now, by using really ridiculous PR like the criticism of the Zelensky's outfit disrespecting the oval office, and other garbage like that.

The bottom line is the White House is embarrassed regardless of what they say, and they look like a petty little amateur squad in the eyes of the entire world.
