Just been to one of my favorite places frequented for years, never had a problem and always order 3 big beers, everyime I visit..

This time when it came to pay the bill she said I had 4, when I knew damn well I only had 3, cos that's all I ever have in this joint!

An argument ensued, in which she was adamant I had 4 beers instead of 3, until her boss came over checked the bill and confirmed that I was right. She then left off in a fit of rage, almost in tears.. what is the solution to this kind of nonsense? Is it pay beer by beer or what? Which itself I have found an inconvenience,  sometimes I have left after paying beer by beer before being asked 'have you paid your bill?...

What the hell is wrong with these people? Why can they never accept when they are wrong? She left without a sorry a nothing, just walked away angry.

Thais are an incredibly strange Group indeed!

Regards,

Bob.

I was in a restaurant with a similar story like yours, the customers made a big fuzz about having 3 beers when the bill said 4, he also stated he never drink more than 3 beers in an evening. In his case they let him off paying 3 beers, and I just by accident was there a few days later when he came back and the manager asked him to follow. Apparently they had it clear on the CCTV that he had ordered 4 beers that evening. He had to pay for 4 only drinking 3 that evening. I asked the manager sinca I know him a bit, and he say he is a regular customer, and just said we was so sorry he must have forgotten one because he usually only have 3.

I do forget how many beers I drink sometimes, and if they take the bottles away like they do on some places I just kindly ask them to leave them so I can keep count... My wife taught me to do that.

She left off in a bit of rage and almost in tears because she lost her face, being wrong or at least corrected by the boss. She was probably sure she was correct otherwise my guess is she would have corrected it directly as they usually do. If they later can confirm you had 4 she probably has to pay for one out of her own pocket. And that remind me of another story, we went to a Thai restaurant and we ordered a big plate of Khao pad poo. Fried rice with crab, and when severed we noticed it seamed wrong and called the guy serving us, and he said he was sorry since he thought Khao pad Moo, Fried rice with pork. So he took it back and came back a few minutes with the correct dish, He was very helpful and during he was helping us filling classes of beers and such, one of my Thai friends asked what happens with the wrong order, and the servant say he has to pay for it with own money, and he can eat it hungry or not no staff discount given.

We gave him tip under the pay slip thingy enough to purchase a lot of  Fried rice pork.

Simple solution....close your bill everytime you order.  This is my practice.  No issues.  I tell them that I check bin.  Then stay and open a new bill.  Then rinse and repeat.

all the ones I have been in have chairs and table in the staff room out back.

My local "All Days" (previously called Family Mart) has narrow tables running along the walls in a separate room with seats, they also sell cold beer, so maybe I can have a 'party' in there with the girlies. 😄

Sometimes works the other way. I was in my local and I came to check the bill. I had two red wines, the bill was for 100 baht and I knew immediately that they had only charged me for one, I told them and they thanked me

It can happen, I paid for my petrol and was given the change which was 300 baht, I then remembered I had a members card so I gave it to the petrol lady and she went off and processed it and then came back and gave me 300 baht change.

I drove a hundred yards or more out of the petrol station and stopped, I thought hang on, did she give me the change twice, I checked my wallet and I saw in the 100 baht section I had 300 baht more than I should have, so I went back and gave her the money back. She looked relieved.

Another time I was in 7/11 and in a hurry, my bill was 280 baht so I gave the female assistant what I thought was 300 baht, but she handed one back to back to me, it was a 1000 baht bill,  I tried to reward her but she would not take it.

I had a Thai restaurant in the UK for 27 years, the staff sometimes make mistakes seeing as they are human, not everyone in Thailand is a crook as some people on this site seem to suggest.

I often wonder why many are still in Thailand if it is so bad.

The answer to what is wrong with these people lies in the concept of losing face. Whilst to the Western mind being shown to be wrong in public is unpleasant, but you take it on the chin and apologise, in many Asian cultures it is a totally unacceptable embarassment - and that is putting it mildly. A very common reaction to having lost face is to seek retribution, but in the circumstances the waitress did not have this option - hence her reaction.

Saving face is the root cause of many problems in Asia IHMO - from bewildering forieners by not apologising for mistakes to people becoming violent when called out on their <deleted>. Not to mention never causing your boss to lose face by correcting them, even when they are about to make a terrible mistake. Whilst this might seem incomprehensible to the Western mind, it is a deeply rooted cornerstone of many Asian cultures

He was a regular customer there.  He said he frequented the same place for years, so she obviously wasn't doing it all the time.

Would be a bit too obvious to try that repeatedly on the same guy, now wouldn't it?

A large portion of trouble with living in Thailand seems to be closely related to alcohol consumption.  Find a new hobby.  You'll be healthier,  healthier, safer, and have far less to complain about.

Try taking a photo of them. It's not rocket science, is it?

Just make sure one of your bar girls is in the picture........

As an aside, every ridiculous story you relate, you always end up in an argument.

Every story.

Maybe it is YOU and not the Thai people who ar at fault.

Yes bars have rubbish food, ugly women and ugly Brits who can't fight. 7/11 is better.

You wanna take a long hard look at your own countrymen before you start slagging off the Brits!

Give him 5 minutes, he'll find a reason to argue with 7/11.

I'll adjust my above comment: 'give him 5 minutes and he'll invent a  less than adult / less than common sense reason to argue with 7/11'.
