Diabetic Emergency Kit

Featured Replies

Where can I purchase a glucagon emergency kit for diabetics suffering an insulin reaction (loss of consciousness). Sometimes it takes 45 minutes for emergency ambulance to respond. Typically requires a doctor's prescription.

Glucagon injection is not  available in Thailand as far as I know. Hospitals of course, can inject a quick acting glucose.

Before loss of consciousness there are warning signs during which person should consume a sugary drink. Glucose  powders (Glucose D, Oracose etc) are readily and cheaply available at any pharmacy and should be kept in the home. They can be drunk plain or added to fruit juice and they  act very quickly.

Also keep honey in the home. If someone is unconscious or otherwise unable to drink, rub honey and/or a thin paste of glucose powder on their tongue and gums while waiting for ambulance.

Thanks for the reply.  I know the paramedics have it here bc they used it on me.  My American doctor said it is essential for someone my age. I guess it is not available to the general public here, but I will check with my BPH doctor as I would think products like Novo Disk Glucagen or Xeris Gvoke would be available here.   Buying it online and shipping is something I would like to avoid.

Are you sure it was glucagon  they injected and not 50%Dextrose?

There is no brand of glucagon listed as registered in Thailand but I suppose there might be a GPO brand (government) as these don't always show in the directory.

If it does exist here you can probably get it.  Maybe even at a (large) pharmacy.

Please let m know what you find out, thanks.

Yes,it was glucagon.  EMTs first did a blood sugar test and then IM injection with glucagon.  My doctor said every type 1 diabetic should have an emergency kit.  I was going to order online from a Canadian pharmacy (much cheaper than USA) but ran out of time before my return trip to LOS.  Looking for a Thai source and this explains all the questions.  I'll probably have to order online, not my choice, but I don't like dealing with Thai Customs.
