Trump Warns Putin of ‘Devastating’ Consequences If Ukraine Ceasefire Is Rejected

President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening severe financial consequences if Russia refuses to agree to a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine. His ultimatum comes as his administration works to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, which he has repeatedly suggested could escalate into World War III.

While discussing potential measures to pressure Russia into compliance, Trump stated, “There are things that wouldn’t be pleasant in a financial sense. I can do things financially that would be very bad for Russia. I don’t want to do that because I want to get peace.” He reiterated the seriousness of his economic leverage, adding, “In a financial sense, yes, we could do things that would be very bad for Russia, that would be devastating for Russia. But I don’t want to do that.”  

 

Trump’s comments follow the announcement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security advisor Mike Waltz that Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire—on the condition that Russia also agrees. This marks a notable shift in Trump’s approach to Russia, as he has previously praised Putin’s strategic thinking and, at times, expressed an understanding of Russia’s position.  

 

His stance took a sharper turn recently, particularly following an intense Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky two weeks ago. This shift was also evident when he posted a trade-related threat against Russia online days earlier.  

 

The United States has already imposed numerous economic sanctions on Russia and its oligarchs since the country’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, as well as following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, with the prospect of a ceasefire now dependent on Russia’s response, Trump is increasing the financial pressure in an effort to force Moscow’s hand.  

 

He pointed to upcoming negotiations in Moscow, where his envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to engage with Russian officials. When asked whether he trusted Putin to abide by a ceasefire, given previous violations, Trump responded, “We haven’t spoken to him yet with substance, because we just found out. We’re going to know very soon. I’ve gotten some positive messages, but a positive message means nothing. Very serious situation. This is a situation that could lead to World War III.”  

 

As tensions rise, the world awaits Russia’s response to Trump’s ultimatum.

Correct -- he didn't wake up one day and decide -- it was a years-long process.  You will remember, being a consumer of Russian agitprop, that Russia invaded Ukraine to take Crimea in 2014, with Putin boasting about "his little green men" having taken it without a shot.  You will remember that Russia stoked Russia nationalism in Ukraine, arming and training separatists to provoke a conflict.  And here we are.

I was living in Russia when they invaded (3rd time).  And I got to see the transparently false justifications for invasion, and talk to friends who knew they were lies but knew they couldn't speak up, and the increasing public propaganda telling Russia this war is the same as the one their grandfathers fought, and the increasing militarism in daily life, and how the government closed down any outlet that did NOT support the invasion, and the paddy wagons lined up in the public spaces to take away anyone who said a word, and the people pushed out of windows and poisoned.

 

Please, continue to lecture me about the realities of Russia and its war.  I just can't wait for you to educate me.

   Trump did actually state that he would end the war within 24 hours of meeting both Putin and Zelensky , and as far as I now,  that hasn't yet happened .

   But pointless telling you guys that , as you  will endlessly just keep parroting "He told a lie, he told a lie"

Headline IMHO is just a little alarmist. This is Trump waving the economic not military stick at Putin but I'm sure it will trigger the loons on the left frothing at the mouth and crying their deluded tears of hate. Fact is all parties want this to end and Trump is trying to get it done.

Did you miss the budget resolution?  Wasn't there a provision wedged in the declares 24-hour periods for the remainder of this term are not to be considered calendar days?

 

There ya go!  We're still on day one!

 

Only drawback is that if days don't count as days, Trump's term will never expire.

 

Guess he learned a little something from Ukraine after all.

Russia invaded Ukraine AFTER NATO made clear it intended to make Ukraine a member and AFTER the CIA backed "revolution" that saw a pro-Russian government toppled in favour of a course of seduction of the West.

 

Ukraine had a boyfriend but wanted to jump into bed with a guy that looked like he had more money. An age old story. But he's not going to marry her, is he?

 

Russia did not need to "stoke nationalism in Ukraine", the decades of brutal neglect of the Donbass by Ukrainian governments managed to do that quite nicely.
