Consequences of Backing Out of a Signed One-Year School Contract?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I recently signed a one-year teaching contract with a school, with a start date set for June. However, I’m now considering another opportunity at a different school. If I decide to back out of the contract before the start date, what are the potential consequences?

The school could go through legal proceedings to seek compensation, but I doubt it.

More likely would be reporting you to the Labour Department and/or TCT, making it extremely difficult to get a waiver, licence or work permit in the future.

Nonsense! He isn't in a contract with the school - his contract starts in June! Even if there was some arbitrary clause in the contract (doubt it - and it would have to be singed and dated as such to be enforceable) he would still be giving way more than 30days notice.

The only consequence you will face is that that school will probably not hire you in the future, and if you used some agent, the agent is gonna be pissed. However, the world of teaching in Thailand is small - send a nicely worded professional email stating that you are unable to join in June, appreciate their time, apologise for the inconvenience etc.

Contract signed. No nonsense. You clearly don't know the "Thai Way".

Maybe nothing more than snarky comments from AN posters when you come back in May complaining that the school you had signed a contract with starting in June backed out because they found a cheaper Filipino teacher.

Just tell the school some BS. You have to go back your country for some reason. You're very sorry. And leave it at that. The possibility of them taking some legal action - when you aren't currently working for them and the start date isn't for 3 more months - is so remote I wouldn't worry about it.
