In an unusual, almost cinematic turn of events, a failed gold heist in Chiang Mai turned into a comedy of errors when the would-be burglar, disguised as a ghost, found himself trapped inside a shopping mall. The young man, identified as Etsara, attempted to rob a gold shop while wearing a cloak and ghost mask, reminiscent of horror movie spectres.

Armed with a crowbar, Etsara’s plan to force entry into the Yaowarat Gold Shop fell apart when he discovered the jewellery had been safely locked away. Unable to escape, he spent the night hiding in the shop until the next morning when staff discovered signs of a break-in. The sight of Etsara behind the counter led to his swift apprehension by police from Mae Ping Police Station.

Etsara, who harboured hopes of financing his education through this botched burglary, confessed his guilt and expressed remorse, citing financial desperation as the motive behind his actions. Despite careful planning, including casing the mall for three days and choosing a disguise to maintain anonymity, his night-long ordeal ended in arrest.

Police are delving deeper into the case to ascertain whether Etsara acted alone or had any accomplices. The ludicrous chain of events has captured widespread attention, providing a humorous reminder that crime, especially when executed in such theatrical fashion, rarely succeeds, reported The Thaiger.
