US Tourist Visa for my Thai Wife

My wife was denied a tourist visa to the states when we were living in Dubai. It was a 2 minute interview I think in which time she has to prove / present evidence to obtain the visa. She didn't present my my salary statement from my work which was the key evidence as it would prove we had a reason to return. That I think was the reason it was denied. The interview was a surprise and I think caught her off guard. therefore my advice is be prepared!

My experience of seeking a US visa is that it's best done in the applicants home country. My wife's US visa application was declined in Beijing (where I was working and she was visiting) but was approved in Bangkok the following year (where neither of us were working, but both living).

Other members comments about ensuring that the visa officers are aware of you (her husband's) immigration status in Thailand, including proof of that's where the family home is, shouldn't be ignored. This was also important when securing her UK visit visa and satisfying the question of ties to Thailand and her reason to return here.

She's a housewife and mum from Isaan by the way. Loves fishing and going foraging with her mum. No "corporate job" or multiple property deeds. None that I know of anyway.

  • You don't want a "marriage visa" unless you intend to live permanently in the US.  It's not for temporary visits, takes a year or two (or maybe more now, who knows), and costs a few thousand dollars.

For the next four years, don't waste your money.

My wife has applied for, and received, two tourist visas for trips to visit my family in the US.  The first was back in 2005 and the second was in 2019 (a 10 year visa that we haven't actually used yet).

She doesn't have a job, but she does own land and has a history of international travel - Laos, Japan, Singapore - without overstaying or misusing her visa.  Also I have a job in Thailand and we just visited the US during school breaks.

The process of applying was not easy, but I did it all myself and she was granted the visas without any problem.  I believe that the fact that our marriage is long term - from 2003 to now - helped.
