In a daring escapade in Pattaya, a Swedish tourist and hotel staff teamed up to catch a sneaky thief in the act. At the ungodly hour of 00:30 on March 28, 2025, Mr. Par Mikael Markusson, a 63-year-old Swede, reported that a thief had made off with his black iPhone 15 and ransacked his room.

 

With quick thinking, Mr. Akkarapat Pakkes, a hotel reception worker, uncovered CCTV footage showing the audacious intruder brazenly attempting to jimmy open room doors.

 

The savvy duo took the case to the Pattaya City Police Station, filing a report with Pol. Sub-Lt. Ittikorn Saikrathok. The hotel footage revealed the same suspect was linked to an earlier heist, targeting resident Krisana Sinet, a 26-year-old transgender woman, just two days before.

 

 

 

That raid saw the pilfered goods include a piggy bank with 2,000 baht, amongst hair appliances worth up to 1,850 baht combined.

 

The suspect, suspected to be a Cambodian, has been wreaking havoc around Soi Thepprasit lodging. Pattaya police are meticulously analysing CCTV evidence, determined to close in on the slippery character. This collaboration between a tourist and hotel staff might just be the key to ending the thief’s spree.

The ONLY way local Plod is successful is with outside help. 

The only time CCTV is used (on the roads) is after a tragedy.

What do you mean? Should they stake out the corridors to be effective for you? Of course people must report a crime for something to be done.

Have you heard the expression 'an accident waiting to happen'?  There's hundreds of vehicles with bald tires waiting for rain; thousands of helmetless, red-light runners; a million drunks staggering about looking for their cars.  Almost weekly, there are bus crashes often loaded with children because maintenance checks are never enforced.

And hundreds of drivers who have no problem going through a red light in a 4 ton truck.... a few of those need serious fines or taking off the road before they plough into a school bus!

Are you saying RTP are doing a half-decent job?  Every police success starts with the proviso 'acting on information received'.

There's a weekly story about crimes that have been reported but no progress made or any evident police activity.  It's often only the threat of mass media that stirs the police into action.

No, that is what you read about, as it´s called valuable news that catches readers interest. But, useless to try and explain that more to you, as you will be too blind to hear and only follow the fellow negative complainers to be in the popular team. At least you guys think you are popular. My negativity is based on personal experience; I do not belong to a team.  I'd had the usual run-ins with RTP where a hundred or so soothed away various sins that I had allegedly committed, but the 1st big one was a scruffy Sattahip cop, arrived at the scene of my accident about 20  minutes later.  I had been run into by two helmetless, licence-less tearaways at 90kph whilst waiting to turn right at a U-turn.  He adjudged I was at fault!  I was stationery at the time. This cost me 90K & two years of torment as my Insurance company accepted his reading of the situation.  The cop also took 15K off my (then) wife to ensure there would be no problem with her husband's next year's visa.

My wife's sister had her car stolen; the family made a citizen's arrest after recognising the thief and called the police.  I took everyone to Dongtan cop-shop Jomtien and was in the room when the fat officer asked for 10K to pursue the case.  The car owner paid four year's of bank loan for a car sold in Cambodia.

Nothing I have read or heard since has changed my opinion in the last ten years.

Sure, dude! They have a focus on you. I am pretty sure the insurance company would have objected if something was wrong, or do you think they like to pay up and shut up. If something was wrong, your wife would also have opposed. But never mind, you are just unlucky. 😂

For example, a responsible person that had received an alert of unexpected movement in an area covered by a CCTV camera.

 

Or even heaven forbid, a routine check of the CCTV on a periodic basis by the responsible person i.e. security, reception etc.

It takes 5 minutes to check and review CCTV footage from multiple cameras, once or twice per day, if they can be bothered.

 

Really easy and straightforward and normal procedure in many places.

 

Remember, as a hotel, they have a duty of care to ensure the security of their guests staying at the premises.

Insurance companies here will often end up paying a thai for the accident when a foreigner is involved and "judged" to be at fault. I've had it happen twice, both times the thai ran into me. Even one when the officer drew a picture of the scene with notes from witness showing the thai was at fault. Mysteriously when the report was written between the insurance agent (key here as the insurance company only sees their report) and the police I was listed at fault but not charged.

Please explain how you check 24 hours coverage of multiple cameras in just FIVE minutes?

You can check if the work of course, checking recordings obviously is not possible in that timespan.

You are talking BS. Alerts are based on movements. Any camera will have hundreds of alerts in just 1 hour

Indeed I think they do - I think agents are on commission.  They went along with the crooked policeman's version of events as it was easier.  You underestimate the fear that bent cops generate in society; my (ex)wife paid up rather than chance my visa/marriage going up in smoke.
