I have.

Not thousands, but hundreds, I lived and worked in Indonesia for eight years and was in Bengkulu, Sumatra for the Sept 2007 8.4 magnitude earthquake. The aftershocks including a couple of 7 and plenty of 6s continued for over six months. That's one day I won't forget, and whenever I see news reports of similar earthquakes I feel for those affected and fully understand what they're feeling, and certainly "Nice one!" doesn't spring to mind.

Note: The quake in NanTou, Taiwan was far worse. Many died. The economy was disrupted. Aftershocks hit us for almost a full year. Power outages, galore.  Earthquakes are unpredictable, frightening, and unavoidable if one lives along the ring of fire.  Some people actually enjoy them, I guess.  One just gets used to them, unless they are not deep down, and close by.

Imagine Storm Chasers following a tornado. They're excited, adrenaline pumping, enjoying the risk and adventure, maybe cheering the tornado on. At the same time they are aware that it could cause damage and death, and they feel sympathy for that. Some people are capable of feeling more than one emotion at the same time. Other people have tunnel-vision emotions, and disapprove of anyone different than them.

 

Some can root for both the lion and the zebra at the same time. Some can appreciate the awesome power of an earthquake, and the excitement of their own personal experience, while also feeling sympathy for those impacted.

I know that I am almost always correct, and do not post what is incorrect.

 

The only problem is:  How to teach members the many things that they do not know.  And, how to stop members from posting inaccurate conclusions, beliefs, and assumptions on TV. This is a HUGE problem for me.  The power of analysis among members should be improved.  In addition, there is too much intellectual rigidness among members. Even when faced with a much more logical and reasonable point of view, most members will hold onto false and inaccurate ideas.  This is a sign of rigidity and lack of brain power, IMHO.  But, nothing can be done about this, I guess.

From the perspective of the science of plate tectonics....many, many thousands of quakes along the ring of fire, and in East Asia...is a VERY IMPRESSIVE number.

 

You should enroll in a course involving the Earth's crust and plate tectonics at MIT.

Maybe then, you would find this number impressive, too.

Not agreeing with the thought process is one thing, but being incapable of at least understanding it only demonstrates that your mind is closed or it is shallow.

 

Here's an analogy for your clarification: Do you find Mount Everest impressive? I think most people do, even though over 300 have died on the mountain and around 200 bodies are still up there. I feel for the fallen and their families, but am still very impressed by that mountain with no disrespect intended.
