US Vice President JD Vance Calls for Greenland to Come Under US Control Amid Rising Tensions

JD Vance has declared that the United States must gain control over Greenland to counter the growing threats posed by China and Russia. The US vice president, speaking to troops at Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, sharply criticized Denmark’s handling of the Arctic territory, asserting that it had "not done a good job" in securing the island or investing in its people.

"Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass," Vance said. He made it clear that the US did not hold an issue with the people of Greenland but rather with Denmark’s leadership. "That simply must change," he added. "It is the policy of the United States that that will change."

 

 

According to Vance, Greenland would be safer under the US "security umbrella" than under Denmark’s protection. He argued that Denmark was failing to shield the territory from "a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China and other nations."

 

Upon landing in Greenland, Vance, accompanied by his wife, Usha, and senior US officials, emphasized his focus on Arctic security. "As you all know, it’s a big issue and it’s only going to get bigger over the coming decades," he told troops. Braving temperatures of -19C, he joked that it was "cold as shit here."

 

Back in Washington, Donald Trump reiterated his belief that the US must control Greenland. "I think Greenland understands that the United States should own it," he declared at a press conference. "And if Denmark and the EU don’t understand it, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland." He insisted that "Chinese and Russian ships [are] all over the place," reinforcing his argument that US control was essential for world peace.

 

Meanwhile, Greenland’s political leaders responded by forming a broad four-party coalition government as a direct rejection of US efforts to claim the island. Four of the territory’s five parties signed an agreement that states on its first page: "Greenland belongs to us."

 

Tensions between the US, Greenland, and Denmark have intensified in recent weeks. The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, accused the United States of exerting "unacceptable pressure" on Greenland and Denmark, vowing: "It is pressure that we will resist."

 

Trump, however, doubled down on his position, saying, "We need Greenland for national security and international security. So we’ll go as far as we have to go. We need Greenland. And the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark. Denmark has to have us have Greenland. And we’ll see what happens. But if we don’t have Greenland, we can’t have great international security."

 

From Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin took note of Trump’s ambitions, stating that "geopolitical competition in the region" was increasing. Speaking at Russia’s Arctic Forum in Murmansk, he remarked, "America’s plans in relation to Greenland are serious. These plans have deep historical roots. And it’s clear that the US will continue to systematically pursue its geo-strategic, military-political, and economic interests in the Arctic."

 

However, he distanced Russia from the issue, saying, "As for Greenland, this is a matter for two specific countries. It has nothing to do with us."

With the US pushing aggressively for control of Greenland, tensions in the Arctic are set to rise further, as Greenland and Denmark push back against American ambitions while Russia watches closely.

Vance much like his boss is a completely ridiculous man and the US is overstepping their bounds to a rather insane extent. They need to be stopped, there needs to be huge pushback and nations around the world simply need to say no to America's zany and ridiculous policies.

A friend of mine from Holland just recently put his mother in a rather luxurious nursing home, he said it's the equivalent of many five-star hotels that he's been to. She has a large, luxurious room with a private balcony overlooking the river. His total outlay is 900 euros monthly. A trashy facility in the US is $9,000 a month and a nice facility is $15,000 a month and up. 

 

I know couples who spend $2000 to $3,000 a month on health insurance alone, in the US. It is an unregulated mafia. 

Just another reason why Greenland and Canada would never choose to be a part of the US. In the process their quality of life would diminished dramatically. 

 

In Denmark, the welfare state is characterised by an extensive social security system and a high degree of income equality. All Danish citizens have equal access to education and health care regardless of their social and financial background. Similarly, every citizen is entitled to a limited compensation for loss of income due to unemployment, disability, or illness – just to name a few of the public services that the welfare system provides.

 

The welfare system does indeed benefit each individual citizen but the main purpose of the Danish welfare model is to ensure healthcare and education for all citizens in order to provide high quality human capital/first class employees of great benefit to the taxpaying companies and hence to the Danish economy.

The BBC got an interview with a Danish Defence Intelligence guy who partially agreed that Denmark has not been investing effectively or delivering already-promised investment.  The guy mentioned some promised investment in 2019 that hasn't started in the audio I heard.

 

The BBC has some text-based report that said:

"Jakob Kaarsbo, a former Chief Analyst in the Danish Defense Intelligence Agency, told Danish broadcaster DR, the speech was a “political propaganda stunt”. He added, "It is true that Denmark has underinvested in the surveillance capabilities that have been agreed upon, but the US has also underinvested in their own military efforts in Greenland and in the Arctic for many years.”

However, there has never been any opposition to the U.S. investing more in Greenland.

 

There's been a partnership between Greenland/Denmark and the U.S. for 20 years already. Nothing prevented the U.S. from investing more than it did. U.S. mining companies are already present.

About defense issues, Greenland and Denmark are part of NATO  and there is already a U.S. base. This base's location is de facto locking access to the Northwest passage. I am not aware of any proposal to extend U.S. presence in Greenland having been rejected.

 

Of course, Trump is lying about China and Russia. China has been banned from any infrastructure project since 2018, and an FDI act has been voted to control foreign investment in infrastructure, energy and minerals. Russia is not interested in Greenland because it already controls the Northeast route.

While not published in western news media, an interview with Putin yesterday in Pravda was worth reading. 

He was quoted as saying that it was time for Russia to take back Alaska, a country it had sold to the USA in the 19th century for "a ridiculously low price."

"The price we got was not serious. It was a joke. Today it remains underdeveloped, which we could change.  It does not even touch the continental United States! Russia is closer to Alaska than any part of continental USA.

Russia was the first to send a satellite into space. With our advanced technology we could develop Alaska. Canada is a possible security barrier and will ensure safety for Americans. All we want is some space to breathe."

American officials went door to door in Nuuk to try and find a Greenland household that would welcome Vance and his wife into their home. Everyone declined. If that’s not a clear message, I don’t know what is.

Surely a joke! If anyone wants to see how Russia 'develops' it's far eastern territories, just Google Nogliki, Kitangli or Petropavlosk Kamchatsky. 

The locals get quite uppity about Japanese claims to the Kurils but I always thought that if I lived there I would be desperate for the Japanese to come and save us from the total disregard they receive from Russian leadership.
