An American man is in critical condition after stabbing himself multiple times in the throat and chest in a dramatic incident that unfolded on a busy Pattaya road. Emergency responders managed to restrain the man and rush him to hospital, but he remains in a life-threatening condition.

The incident occurred at approximately 17:05 on 3 March, on the central reservation of Sukhumvit Road near the traffic lights motorway junction, in North Pattaya. Witnesses reported that the man, identified only as 35-year-old Mr Brian, was sitting on the ground reading aloud from a book, while holding a 10cm knife to his throat. Police and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation attempted to talk him down, but he suddenly began stabbing himself in a frenzied attack, causing severe bleeding.

As officers moved in, the man resisted violently, breaking free and running erratically with blood covering his body. He then collapsed to his knees, repeatedly punching the ground in apparent distress before authorities were able to restrain him. He was given emergency first aid before being transported to hospital.

Authorities discovered his belongings nearby, including several novels by well-known authors. His passport was also recovered.

A witness, 63-year-old Ms Tipawan, described her fear upon seeing the foreign man initially pressing the knife to his own throat. Concerned that he might become aggressive towards others, she quickly alerted police.

The exact cause of the man’s distress remains unknown. Investigators are attempting to contact his family to determine any underlying issues that may have contributed to the disturbing event.

Police continue to monitor the case, while medical professionals are providing critical care in an attempt to stabilise the man’s condition.

Drugs ? Over consumption of booze ? Both mixed in a deadly cocktail ?

Very sad to see the mentally weak end up in this way, should it be the case here. But it's business first, so ...next please.

Yaba, yaba, it's a helluva drug.

That stuff (meth) has addicts staying up for days, even weeks at a time and they suffer from sleep deprivation which gives them terrible hallucinations combined with the drugs can lead to severe episodes of paranoia and depression etc.

Sad. I hope he recovers. But afterward, they should give him the medication first – before handing him the hospital bill.

Making sure to check the area for any sharp objects

It's a right bummer when your holiday is over and you have to head to the airport tomorrow! 😭

Yep I probably do the same if I had to go back to USA.

It's not easy trying to talk someone down from the ground.

There are a few things about this that I don't understand. I kind of have a sense of the level of desperation that one must feel to try to take one's own life, but if you're going to fail at anything don't fail it suicide, for God's sake!

Do it right, jump off a major building, there's just so many different ways that you can easily kill yourself and die for sure. What was this idiot thinking? The worst possible result in an effort to try to kill yourself would be to continue living with horrific lifelong injuries.

Many that do it in public this way are looking for help. If he definitely wanted to die, there are other ways that are quick, like you mentioned.

I knew Pattaya was bad but not this bad.
