A deputy investigative inspector was shot dead in a brazen attack in Narathiwat province on the evening of 9 April. The assailants then set fire to a car at the scene in what authorities believe was the work of insurgents active in the region.

At 18:55, local authorities were alerted by Mr. Sukri Yakariya, the village head of Pholang Moo 5, To Deng sub-district, that a vehicle was on fire on a road near Batu Bue Nae, a satellite village of Pholang. In response, Police Captain Hilemy Anusasnabut, deputy investigator at Su-ngai Padi Police Station, and Police Colonel Mataha Moona, the station chief, rushed to the scene with a team of police and military personnel.

Upon arrival, officers found a sedan engulfed in flames. Firefighters were dispatched and took more than twenty minutes to bring the blaze under control. After extinguishing the fire, investigators discovered the body of Police Lieutenant Colonel Ammarit Apamaka, deputy inspector of the investigative division at Narathiwat Provincial Police, lying near the roadside.

He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds from an unidentified firearm. His body was transferred to Su-ngai Padi Hospital for a full autopsy.

The area was immediately sealed off to allow for further forensic and investigative work. Early reports suggest the attack may have been carried out by local insurgent elements, as the area is known for the activity of violent separatist groups.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and have vowed to pursue those responsible for the deadly ambush.

Remind me again, what is the religion of the people of Narathiwat?

Not everyone here is a Muslim. There are Buddhists, Christians and people of other faiths.

As a farang living in Narathiwat, I am a Christian too. We actually have a small community of missionaries here. And they wouldn't be here, if there outreach efforts were completely in vain.

Peace talks are on-going, how many years now ?

Started in earnest in 2013 with PM Yingluck but went proverbially "dead" with the Thai military's overthrow of the Yingluck government in May 2014.

Police speculating without any thread of truth or fact. They never seem able to take a neutral position before beginning any investigation. Kind of a form of self-promotion.

Religion of Peace!

My wife’s cousin was stationed down and around  there for 5 years  . He was glad to get reassigned up to Issan.

He said it was scary!

I recently completed staying in all 77 of Thailands provinces.Saved Yala,Pattani and Narathiwat until last because of what our British Government recommend.I enjoyed it down there and like the rest of Thailand, the people were fantastic.

Sorry, it goes back at least to the 1990s. Her father oversaw a particularly bad event, the Tak Bai Massacre,  when something like 200 "insurgents" died. I think it was in 2004. You could argue it goes back to 1959, when the CIA first offered Field Marshal Sarit funds to "combat Communism" (there was no "Communist" activity before that). That set off a low-level civil war in the Northeast and the South. Both came to an end for a while under Prem, but the South started up again at a lower level in the mid-'90s. It dies down and falls off the news, then something like this pops up.
