Thai AirAsia is enhancing regional travel by introducing a new direct route between Phuket and Medan, Indonesia, starting on June 27. This new connection offers travellers an exciting opportunity to delve into Southeast Asia's cultural and natural wonders, with flights operating four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Tansita Akraritpirom, Head of Commercial at Thai AirAsia, announced this development on April 16, highlighting the airline's commitment to boosting tourism and economic growth in both Thailand and Indonesia. "Phuket continues to thrive as a top-tier travel hub in the region," she said, noting the aim to offer travellers more options beyond traditional destinations like Bangkok, with direct access to Indonesia's rich culture and natural beauty.

This expansion forms part of AirAsia's broader strategy to enhance its international network from Phuket, following recent direct flight additions to India and other ASEAN countries. The Phuket-Medan route targets emerging markets, further cementing Phuket’s status as a pivotal travel hub.

Eddy Krismeidi Soemawilaga, Head of Indonesia AirAsia Affairs & Policy, lauded the new route as a major step towards enhancing international connectivity with Medan and boosting cross-country tourism.

Phuket, renowned for its pristine beaches, bustling nightlife, and water sports, continues to be a magnet for tourists. Last year, the island attracted over 11.3 million visitors, contributing more than 388 billion baht to the local economy. Meanwhile, Medan, Indonesia’s largest city outside Java, is celebrated for its multicultural tapestry, including Batak, Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Javanese influences, and serves as a gateway to the stunning Lake Toba.

In 2024, North Sumatra welcomed over 250,000 foreign tourists, marking a 26.32% increase in international arrivals. With Thai AirAsia's new route, travellers now have even more incentives to explore these vibrant destinations, from enjoying Phuket's beaches to indulging in Medan's diverse street food offerings. This expansion underscores AirAsia's commitment to fostering tourism growth and providing seamless travel experiences throughout Southeast Asia, reported The Thaiger.
