Now back then the Islands were full of all sorts of contraband, you name it you could get it. I met a guy there who was from the same part of the world as I was - so we became pals. He, however, was into those little pink tabs that can be smoked. I, on the other hand, wasn't - just booze and birds for The Don back then... One night I got a phone call at about 04:30am saying that, let's call him Vito, had been arrested for possession of said pink tabs and was remanded on 100,000 baht bail and they asked if I could help. At that time I hardly had a pot to pee in due to my own wild ways so the answer was no. I was also informed that the cops had confiscated his passport. Almost a week went by and our mutual friend informed me that he had managed to scrape together the funds for bail and was out again, with a date set for his first court appearance. Then about 3 or 4 days later, our mutual friend informed me that despite him having no passport or legal documents, he had managed to escape to Cambodia to a safe house. From there he went to the embassy, got an emergency travel document and flew home. It was at this point that I had contact with him for the first time since his arrest, though he was reluctant to go into details of how he managed to cross the border. I haven't seen or spoken to him for over 15 years, but as far as I am aware he is living happily somewhere and has married and has also found god. Now my question is, that given his lack of a passport - how on earth did he manage to cross into Cambodia? Was this kind of thing possible back then if enough palms were greased? Anyone who has been through, or knows someone that has been through a similar situation could perhaps help shed some light on how he did it. The Don. Boring fairy tale. 😴🥱🧑🎄

April 19, 2025Apr 19 I think what they are trying to say is that besides the Immigration check points there is no barrier or anything to stop you crossing so you could still cross the border elsewhere...just hope there's no authorities on patrol either side at the time.

You didn't say if he passed through Cambodian immigration or not, assuming not. When I used to go to the border every 3 months some moons ago it was to both Ban Laem and Ban Pakard. Can't quite remember which one had a toilet in among the trees of "no man's land", think intended for immigration staff but was used by people from both sides of the border. From what I saw wouldn't have been too difficult for someone to get across if they were that way inclined.
April 19, 2025Apr 19 Crossing the Border without going through immigration (x2) is the easy part. What could be far trickier nowadays is then exiting from Cambodia. "Back in the day", before Cambodian immigration was computerised, you would turn up at your home country embassy in PP, claim "lost/stolen passport" and get an replacement or emergency travel doc. You would then visit Cambodian Immigration, pay the fee for an exit permit (memory suggests you are given 7 days to leave the kingdom?) etc. and then fly out. BUT Cambodian immigration now appears to be fully computerised, so now immigration likely checks your entry/visa status when you apply for the exit permit, in which case the above will no longer work. It depends on how their database can be searched - if only by passport number then it should still work (because you do not have that number), but if they can also search on name, D.O.B., nationality, etc. then it would throw up no record of entry and so some squeeze would be needed.
April 19, 2025Apr 19 I've got to make a second account and start spewing troll-bait like the other who are able to become "AseanNow's Most Popular Posters." I'm pretty sure within three months I'd have the top spot. But that would leave me pretty much without a soul. I think I'll pass on it. Tempting though, living in the shoes of a bull**** artist.

April 19, 2025Apr 19 Thailand borders with neighboring countries by land with mountain or river acting as natural borders geographically. There is no long never ending fencing on land borders so crossing the border is easily done. Problem arises a few kilometers down the roads where there are road blocks manned by the soldiers or police depending upon where they are. If losing your passport, you can’t always claim you lost it and be on your way to the embassy to report it. Local authorities do not want to be bothered by this issue. once I visited the 3 pagoda pass on the border between thailand and myanmar. You can enter into one shopfront which is on Thailand ground and exit the rear door which is on myanmar land. No fuss no authorities. It is free I was told but I did not want to tempt fate because the fee for coming back might not be free.
April 20, 2025Apr 20 Jeez Bob you’ve turned into a real bore. That’s 5 minutes of my life I’ll not get back. How about “why is it so hot in Thailand” for your next riveting post?

I was thinking along the lines of the various incarnations of bob smith. Then there is the human immunglobulin whose posts go immediately to the top of Popular in the Pub even when nobody is reading his posts. 👈 Zero reads - "Most Popular"! Given that Gammagobulin's posts tend a get a little boost in ratings, as I said before, there should just be a section carved out for those promoted by AN: Gammagobulin's Garden and bob smith's Soliloquies.
