Sooner or later, both Xi and Trump are going to come to the conclusion that the tariff nonsense is not good and has to stop.  Will they admit that publicly?

Another case of bothsidesism. Xi has already emphatically stated that this tariff nonsense is not good. Don't try to pin any of it on him.

My guess:  Trump is all bravado at times, but no one really knows what he's thinking. That's a good thing and works to his advantage. But. he needs for this to end.

Ask the businesses trying to make plans  if it's a good thing that no one knows what Trump is thinking. I don't know if it even works to his advantage, given his poor history of negotiating, but how does it work to America's advantage?

My guess:  China will agree to a set of terms that seems to satisfy Trump.  After that, they'll go back to China and continue business as usual, as they always do.  They have a recent history of doing just that, right?  They'll agree to anything, and then return more or less to business as usual

And how will this be an improvement on what was the status quo before Trump launched his economic warfare? In fact, conditions will be worse because who will trust the United States to keep its word after what Trump has done?

So China is a perfect country and never cheats on anything?  They never manipulate their currency, they never steal intellectual property, they've never reneged on a treaty or other international agreement?

China is as much to blame as anyone.

That wasn't what you said.Xi has been consistent in saying a tariff war is a bad idea.

How does it work to America's advantage?  Well, Trump so happens to be the sitting President.  He's the one that's supposed to handle foreign policy, right?  Or would you like to see him fail?  Do you want America to fail?

Like it or not, Trump is currently the president, and that's the reality.

Usually, I try to confine myself to thinking about reality.

I suppose I could make up a fantasy. We could all go to live in Never-Never Land and live happily ever after.  If we're going to fantasize instead of dealing with reality, we might as well do it right.

So it works to America's advantage to confuse and anger what used to be America's allies?  It works to America's advantage to break its word? It works to America's advantage to be seen as unreliable?

So, it's a bad thing to question and criticize any president on foreign policy issues? That's the kind of argument supporters of George Bush and Lyndon Johnson used in defense of certain wars.  Or is it just this criticizing this president that should be taboo?

You said "don't try to pin any of it" on Xi.  Look above if you need to refresh your memory.

You said I was engaging in "bothsidesism."  If you want to call it that, fine.  China does not come to the table with clean hands, regardless of Xi's pronouncements.  Whether or not Xi has consistently stated that the tariffs are a bad idea, Trump's position has been  taken in response to China's actions over the years.   So it's reciprocal. It always has been, it always will be.

Criticize all you want. That's fine. Just don't think that criticism addresses the real issue.  All you're doing is fantasizing about what could be or what should be.  But the reality is that it is Trump and Xi who will settle this matter.  Not you. Not me.

Even if I agree with all your criticisms, how would that help?  How does that change the fact situation?

If you farm cattle, you stand guard at the cowshed every night…But either way, do not even dare thinking about sleeping at home.” [1] The general trend of the state of public security in China’s countryside over the last decade is one where criminal activities of all kinds are surging steadily.."

China’s manufacturing boom, while providing rural laborers with employment opportunities, has unintended, if not entirely negative consequences on security in the countryside. Criminal syndicates, whether local or transplanted from the cities, are gaining greater presence in rural China. While some operate like bandits, moving from one village to another, burglarizing households and terrorizing the local populace, others maintain a more permanent presence. Local groups produce counterfeit goods, operate illegal gun-manufacturing workshops and produce drugs (particularly methamphetamines) as a quick means to escape poverty.

The Jamestown Foundation is a very creditable source that generally reports verifiable facts without bias but i would point out that this report is a decade out of date things have greatly improved since then and the and the police and security resources allocated to it has become a major priority for the Chinese Government.

I don't recall having a "motto."

As for Biden?  Not much need to waste any energy worrying about that nonsense.  Biden didn't seem to be in charge of anything, though.  Biden, Trump.  Whoever is running the country is running the country and there's not much you can do about it.  During an election cycle, that's a different matter.  For example, why not voice an opinion about Harris or whoever?  That's when it might matter.

Trump Is Begging China to Make a Deal Over Tariffs

Looks like Trump is ready to bend over.

Bessent sees de-escalation with China, situation unsustainable

(Bloomberg) — US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told a closed-door investor summit Tuesday that the tariff standoff with China is unsustainable and that he expects the situation to de-escalate.

Bessent added that negotiations haven’t started but that a deal is possible, according to people who attended his session at an event hosted by JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Washington, which wasn’t open to the public or media.

What is the 33% about?

Did you see that negotiations haven't started, and that China has made clear they are not interested in talks with a bully?

It is very clear to everyone, but the cult members of which you are part, that Trump get desperate, otherwise why does he see a de-escalation when there is not the slightest sign that China will want to talk?

Maybe they heard how Vietnam was offering the US to stop Chinese passthrough exports?

Either way, clearly the Chinese are very afraid of what's coming.

How long before China folds, gets on its knees and begs for negotiations?

Absolutely. It's definitely the Chinese who will balk. And it's they who will use any excuse for an exit...oh wait a minute

White House is ‘close’ on Japan, India tariff agreements — but expect them to be light on specifics

One person close to the White House said that it “may take months to hammer out the final deals.”

The White House is closing in on general agreements with Japan and India to stave off massive U.S. tariffs, but they are likely to leave many of the thorny details to be hashed out at a later date.

In the absence of full-fledged trade deals, administration officials are working to ink what three people close to the White House described as “memorandums of understanding” or a broad “architecture” for future deals. They were granted anonymity to discuss the details of internal deliberations.

The agreement should be written on a fig leaf. Stormy Daniels should be asked how big it needs to be.

Trump ready to balk, only his cult doesn't see what a bullying loser he is.

Trump says US will set terms if China does not do a trade deal.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that if China does not agree to a deal on trade, the U.S. will set the terms.

Trump also told reporters he would be very nice in negotiations with Beijing and that tariffs on imports from the country would fall significantly following a deal, but not to zero.

So Trump will be setting the terms coming from China as well? I guess that means Xi is really a puppet of Trump's.

It means he will just cave in and remove the tariffs, because he can't win

Because promises and understandings are virtually the same thing as a signed deal? Why wouldn't Japan and India want to drag out the negotiations. I didn't see any time limit imposed on them. Not that anyone at this point would take time limits coming from Trump seriously. Ya think the Chinese are looking at this and thinking that they're in big trouble now? It is to laugh.

Obviously these comprehensive and highly complex trade deals take a lot of time to complete. It would be silly to impose an unrealistic time limit for such a complex process.

There is no time pressure from Trump's side after all, the money from tariffs comes pouring in until the deals are done. So why would Trump be concerned about the timeline? His concern are the terms.

Japan and India are very reliable allies anyway, of course they will be given plenty of time.

Yes, China know they are  inbig trouble. Why do you think they're so shy to negotiate? Because they know they will be made to suffer. Why do you think they're nervously threatening other nations that they will be punished if they make deals with the US that affect them negatively? Because they know things are not going their way. Poor China, she is so screwed.
