There is a ~$300 billion trade deficit between the U.S. and China. This means that $300 billion dollars are leaving the U.S. every year so China can spend it as they want, including financing their military. The U.S. is basically financing their military on borrowed money.  The U.S. is in debt $36 TRILLION dollars because of crazy trade imbalances and government over spending. How many people know these facts?

 

I think it is too late for the U.S. to save itself, unless those protesters, the ones rejecting higher tarrifs so they can continue to buy cheap Chinese goods, and protesting the layoffs for a smaller government, understand what will happen if the country does not change course quickly and reduce the debt. The U.S. is far behind China and incapable of supporting itself at the moment.

And, even if the company was operating pre-2003, it was still in no way doing the same business it is doing now.

 

Back in 1995, most electronics companies in China were far less sophisticated than they are now.

The AI revolution cab't be stopped, in any event.  Tesla is already using its Optimus robots in its factories, and the plans are for millions to be rolled out to industry over the next five years.  They'll be cheap enough that you'll be able to buy one for your home.

Trump/Anyone should wish to bring manufacturing back to the USA...ASAP....

But, this is not to increase factory jobs in the USA for humans.

 

We need to, once again, produce products we need, at home.

We cannot and should not rely on China to produce what we need.

I just saw a YT video about making cars in the US, and there are plenty of humans on the assembly line.

 

Plenty of people want those jobs, if they pay well.

And that is the absolute crux of the issue, and the very reason why very little overseas manufacturing will return to the US. Wages are too high. Skills are too low. And cost are insane. Trump already lost this battle. He is simply too dim to realize it. Great campaign slogan. Ridiculously far from reality.

It won't take five years.  Robots are in use now in Tesla factories and the rollout will proceed over the next five years at an almost exponential rate.  It's not as if everyone sits around and waits five years and then someone flips a switch. 

 

Anyway, don't confuse the two issues.  AI controlled robots are one thing.  Removing manufacturing from China and bringing it back to America is something else again.  One is going to happen, in any event.  The other is necessary for national security.

 

The trick will be to somehow find a way to support all the people who will no longer be needed as factory workers.  That's going to be the problem, regardless of what happens with China.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the manufacture of tennis shoes or socks in some overseas sweat shop.  Neither product is a matter of national security. And you're right, Americans wouldn't work for $10 a day.

 

On the other hand, maybe it's a good idea to bring drug manufacturing back to America?  Cutting edge computer chips?  Critical minerals? 

 

And I suppose there's some middle ground.  Products that could be manufactured in the USA but are not and are not really a matter of national security.  Maybe they can make it work or maybe not.
