Crime AI Eyes on Crime: Police Capture 402 Suspects
Picture courtesy of Sophon. Tourism police in Pattaya have showcased the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras in capturing wanted criminals, reporting a total of 402 arrests, nationwide, since the system’s introduction. At Pattaya Tourist Police Station, Police Lieutenant General Sakdira Phueak-am, Commander of the Tourist Police Division, along with Senior Police Officers Thongwut Chueaplakit and Tolarb Tinamat, joined other tourism police in a nationwide video conference to review the AI camera program under the initiative, “Advanced Tourist Police: AI Cameras Connecting Databases to Catch Criminals.” Currently, AI cameras have been installed in ten key provinces including Pattaya, Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Nakhon Ratchasima. The cameras link to the Central Investigation Bureau’s (CIB) database of wanted persons, helping authorities intercept offenders before they commit crimes in tourist areas. The latest case in Pattaya saw the cameras detect, 24-year-old Ms. Chatralikan, wanted under a Chiang Mai Criminal Court warrant for charges including gang activity, fraud, computer data forgery and money laundering. She was arrested in Bang Lamung District and has been transferred to Chiang Mai for legal proceedings and is recorded as the 399th suspect apprehended through the AI system. Police Lieutenant General Sakdira revealed that since the system began, tourism police have apprehended a total of 402 suspects, with Nakhon Ratchasima recording the highest number of arrests at 151. The system has also successfully intercepted high-profile offenders involved in major cases, including call centre gangs, “mule” accounts, drug offences and large-scale fraud. As the first law enforcement body to deploy operational AI cameras, the Tourist Police Division hopes the technology will contribute to safer tourist destinations and enhance public confidence in the security of tourist areas.
