Protecting Face From the Sun.

Featured Replies

I really enjoy cycling. No great distances or speeds, just leisurely trips on back roads in the local countryside.

I've got very pale skin and auburn hair and have recently been diagnosed with a skin cancer on my face and don't want my bike trips to be cut short in an effort to reduce exposure to sunlight.

Does anybody have any recommendations of a semi-rigid, breathable cycling mask to cover nose and mouth? Head and neck protection is easier and I've been using one of the hat/face mask combos that people wear in the fields but don't find it very practical.

Thanks.

Whatever you wear might feel a bit hot but Lazada have UV protection masks suitable for cycling like this :

Go out at dawn, return by 9am.

No sun problems then.

No need for any protection, arm, legs, face safe.

This is semi rigid and covers the face only :

Just as an aside,my plastic helmet is faded from the sun on top of,so ya need to wear something

I only ever go out in the evenings after the sun has dimmed. I always time it so I have 2 hours and arrive back just before dark so the time I leave depends on the time of year. This fits my schedule but if you're an early riser of course go in the morning but the sun is harder to avoid then.

Problem is when it rains in the evening I miss that day or get resolve to get soaked but that's the rainy season for me (like today).

Any material mask is going to get hot and impact breathing... not ideal.

I guess what you want is something fixed that stands away from your face...

This was in in Kick-starter Phase 10 years ago - I'm not sure if it made it to main market.

Given the idea, I wonder if you could get something similar made that can attach to your cycling helmet - could be a good project.

I'm also thinking of the face Shield on my Bell Custom 500 Motorcycle helmet...

Its only affixed with 3 'press-stud' buttons...   If you could find away to affix the male studs very securely to your bicycle helmet you could have an 'interchangeable' face-shield that protects in the day and can be removed at night.

I played a racket sport recently and a very comely Chinese girl had this full face mask on. She looked like Zorro.

I have to admit, I found it rather arousing.
