Hi all,
I’m looking to buy a 2TB external hard drive, preferably an SSD, to use with my MacBook for Time Machine backups.

Any suggestions on where to buy one—online or in-store in Thailand—would be really appreciated. Looking for something reliable at a decent price.
Thanks in advance!

Even well known stores like Advice, Seagate, Kingston, Sandisk and others are selling on Lazada and Shopee. No problem in ordering from these platforms but pay attention to order within Lazada or Shopee mall shops. I ordered an SSD 2 tb disk from SandDisk at Lazada for a promotion price and it is great.

I believe you are referring to a label (attached) shown on the product when listed by Shopee. What exactly does that mean?

Another common label is "preferred" (also attached). What does that one mean?

Forget doing it online. Too much of a chance that you will get substandard equipment.

Dr. Macbook in Bangkok is the place to go. You can even order it by phone with them and they can ship it to you. At least this way you know you are getting genuine Apple supplies.

Just google Dr. Macbook.

It means that the seller has joined their group so they get the preferred listing. Also, as i learned with Shopee the hard way. Just because it says the name brand, does not mean it really is. Especially with electronics. Hard drives in particular. They claim it is not false advertising because they get the parts from a plants that makes those products for a name brand company. But it is not the same. An example would be you order your hard drive and it shows 2TB memory. But when you try to download 500GB it can not because they use a multiplier in the software to make it appear only to have the 2TB. Be really careful of this.

Do you need 'genuine Apple' for an external SSD. Will any not do?

Given that the OP is looking for an SSD, Dr Macbook may not be the right place to look. They appear to focus on Mac repair rather than selling peripherals. (But thanks for the reference, might come handy one day, it's good to know where to go for MacBook repair.)

With SSD, I agree with the above posts that it's best to stick with reputable brands that specialize in storage, especially if one can be assured they are genuine.

Names as already mentioned.

Advice shop e.g.

Take the effort to visit a shop.

SSD for backup? Waste of money and lesser life expectancy.

Ignorant question: does such a Mac have USB-C or what's the preferred connection?

Lesser than what?

And, what do you recommend as a reliable AND cost effective way to backup 2TB worth of data?

Plugging in a hdd to do timemachine backups seems a bit of a chore. I remember scheduling backups but not having it connected, and there would be an annoying warning triangle on the menu bar.

It would be better to get a cheap 2 bay (Synology) NAS, there always seems to be one kicking around on marketplace.

A couple of spinning drives, connect to the network and schedule for a 1:00 am backup, set and forget.

I dont see what the fuss is about tbh, JBL / banana / advice are great sellers on whatever platform, JBL have an amazing phone helpline.

Surely Incremental Back-ups is all that's needed.

Set which ever app you use, and schedule twice a week should be enough, Mac or PC.

I would personally buy online but not from Lazada or Shoppee. Banana IT are very reputable. Free delivery, and delivery within three hours if you're in Bangkok. 4,000 baht for a Sandisk 2TB external SSD.

I bought one of these 1TB from Banana, sometimes I get the message disk needs formatting, which is a disaster because you lose everything, minutes later it's OK again, message gone

Yes, OP uses a Mac, with a proprietary timemachine app which is incremental, but it also stores snapshots so you can step back through time to a previous backup. It works great.

Same as AOMEI Backupper for PC. Full backup once a month, increments twice a week. Auto delete when disc is full.
