i think what America did for the war effort - issuing loans - making money off of someone else's misery....only coming in at the last minute...is often overlooked .Why does that form the basis of a special relationship? Why does that special relationship require UK to alienate  China ...?

Correct, it's your opinion, which just happens to be wrong.  So wrong it's silly to even suggest the dodged he draft.

Trump dodged the draft. 4 times he got college deferment, the fifth time he got called up. The so called bone spurs he claimed as the reason he was medically unfit for, he never had 'treated'.

Sorry, don't know everyone that served, or was dumb enough to enlist.  Are you a Yank of age, and did you enlist during the Nam war ?

I signed up for the draft, after the war was over ... :cheesy:

Probably irrelevant, as had a SS card.   Brother enlisted in the AF, to avoid the draft to the Army.  Wasn't stationed in Nam, did a UK tour.  I was a mere 18 months younger than him, and war still going when I was 18.  Still drafting people when I was 20 yrs old, then draft ended June 1973.

Took Hitler's war machine six weeks to conquer France. It's inarguable that the US's entry into WW II changed the tide of the war.

It took them a bl00dy long time to join in!

Speaking to American troops, Trump downplayed France’s role in the war and insisted that the United States deserves far more recognition for its contributions

In this case, the man has a point, France would have been toast without the US and the UK.

Not at all.   You are just ignorant to the 'fact' that he didn't have to serve, and would have never been drafted with such a high selective service number.

Or did you simply ignore that fact, or not comprehend my post ?

Let me know, as I can explain it to you if necessary.  You might want to google 'ad hominem' also, along with pot & kettle references.

It did. For years Uncle Joe pleaded for the US and the UK to open a second front to assist Russia's fight with Germany. But only when they were absolutely sure that Germany was close to defeat in 1944 did the Americans and British help the Russians out and open a second front.

Shameful cowardice really.

They should hold an easter egg parade, because like easter eggs, the Americans and British were hiding from the German homeland for most of the war.

Europe & E. Asia would have been toast without USSR (Russia) ... hope they got most of the recognition and accolated on the day.

Without the USSR, German & Japanese occupation would have lasted so much longer.  Well at least German.

Japan through in the towel after they got spanked 2X, although the end was inevitable at that point, as beat on the mainland, and losing islands fast.  Only question was how many civilians was Japan willing to sacrifice to continue on.

Amazing the ignorance shown by some folks about WW2.   Hint:  the movies were propaganda, very far from reality.  USSR was your savior, not the USA, or yourselves.   Hitler's biggest mistake, engaging war with USSR.

I would argue that Hitler's ill-judged decision to tear up the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and invade Russia on 22nd June 1941, nearly six months prior to the 7th December Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and the USA declaring war on Germany on 11th December 1941, was when the outcome of WW2 was decided

Quite right. Hitler of course made the decision based on fantastically false force estimates by Fremde Heere Ost, the German intelligence service. Hitler said on record after the fighting was in full flow, if he had known the true extent of Russian forces he never would have started the war with Russia.

So it was the German intelligence service that caused the disaster, by providing totally false figures. The Germans were always terrible at secret service work.

The US's entry into the war undoubtedly shortened it's length, but Hitler's decision to start an Eastern Front was the point he lost the war.

Argue away. All I said is the US's entry changed the tide of war and it's inarguable. The military industrial complex of the US played a huge role in changing the course of WWII. Of course Russia's role was huge as was Hitler's mistakes and the list goes on but the topic is the US.

And the US would have been toast during the Revolutionary War, had the French not assisted by blockading the harbor at Yorktown, preventing the British Navy from landing and reinforcing their troops, which was a major turning point for the Americans. This blockade was the most important factor in the Brits losing the war.

Perhaps he should be kissing their a**es with those lying lips of his.

Pres. Donald Trump had a draft # of 356, out of 365.  He didn't have to dodge anything, as had a snowball's chance in hell of being drafted.

n 1968, after receiving four deferments due to education, Donald Trump was diagnosed with bone spurs in his heels at the age of 22, seven years before the Vietnam War ended.

In a 2016 interview with The Times, Trump claimed that a doctor “gave me a letter – a very strong letter – on the heels” to provide to draft officials. In the interview, Trump couldn’t recall the name of the doctor.

He used lies and bribes to dodge the draft, records prove it

Other men his age did not have that choice, furthermore he referred to those who became prisoners of war as "losers"

The most revolting hypocrisy is that, like other dicktators, he wants a military parade for his birthday, wants to be "honoured" by those he has no respect for

So you also have no clue how the selective service draft numbers work in the USA.   Have a nice day.

The only contribution France made to the war was to provide inspiration for a popular British sitcom, which took the piss out of all nationalities involved including ourselves of course.

I doubt the BBC has any plans to repeat any episodes lol

oh dear by the three "thumbs down" icons my comment received it appears some miserable people didn't like "Allo Allo". lol no accounting for taste as they say

World War II commemorations are like a religion to many Europeans, especially the British. Frankly, it seems unhealthy to me, trying to compensate for present day inadequacy through constantly sanctifying events that occurred 80 to 86 years ago.
