i think what America did for the war effort - issuing loans - making money off of someone else's misery....only coming in at the last minute...is often overlooked .Why does that form the basis of a special relationship? Why does that special relationship require UK to alienate  China ...?

Trump dodged the draft. 4 times he got college deferment, the fifth time he got called up. The so called bone spurs he claimed as the reason he was medically unfit for, he never had 'treated'.

Sorry, don't know everyone that served, or was dumb enough to enlist.  Are you a Yank of age, and did you enlist during the Nam war ?

 

I signed up for the draft, after the war was over ...  

 

Probably irrelevant, as had a SS card.   Brother enlisted in the AF, to avoid the draft to the Army.  Wasn't stationed in Nam, did a UK tour.  I was a mere 18 months younger than him, and war still going when I was 18.  Still drafting people when I was 20 yrs old, then draft ended June 1973.

Pres. Donald Trump had a draft # of 356, out of 365.  He didn't have to dodge anything, as had a snowball's chance in hell of being drafted.

It did. For years Uncle Joe pleaded for the US and the UK to open a second front to assist Russia's fight with Germany. But only when they were absolutely sure that Germany was close to defeat in 1944 did the Americans and British help the Russians out and open a second front.

They should hold an easter egg parade, because like easter eggs, the Americans and British were hiding from the German homeland for most of the war.

Europe & E. Asia would have been toast without USSR (Russia) ... hope they got most of the recognition and accolated on the day.  

 

Without the USSR, German & Japanese occupation would have lasted so much longer.  Well at least German.   

 

Japan through in the towel after they got spanked 2X, although the end was inevitable at that point, as beat on the mainland, and losing islands fast.  Only question was how many civilians was Japan willing to sacrifice to continue on.

 

Amazing the ignorance shown by some folks about WW2.   Hint:  the movies were propaganda, very far from reality.  USSR was your savior, not the USA, or yourselves.   Hitler's biggest mistake, engaging war with USSR.

Quite right. Hitler of course made the decision based on fantastically false force estimates by Fremde Heere Ost, the German intelligence service. Hitler said on record after the fighting was in full flow, if he had known the true extent of Russian forces he never would have started the war with Russia.

 

So it was the German intelligence service that caused the disaster, by providing totally false figures. The Germans were always terrible at secret service work.

Argue away. All I said is the US's entry changed the tide of war and it's inarguable. The military industrial complex of the US played a huge role in changing the course of WWII. Of course Russia's role was huge as was Hitler's mistakes and the list goes on but the topic is the US.

And the US would have been toast during the Revolutionary War, had the French not assisted by blockading the harbor at Yorktown, preventing the British Navy from landing and reinforcing their troops, which was a major turning point for the Americans. This blockade was the most important factor in the Brits losing the war.

Perhaps he should be kissing their a**es with those lying lips of his.

World War II commemorations are like a religion to many Europeans, especially the British. Frankly, it seems unhealthy to me, trying to compensate for present day inadequacy through constantly sanctifying events that occurred 80 to 86 years ago.
