Because he didn't volunteer to go fight in an unjust war that most would agree was one of the USA's biggest military mistakes since WW2, at the time.  Waste of millions of lives, including almost 60k American soldiers killed, and 1000's more soldiers & famly's lives ruined.

 

Seems like an intelligent move to me.  Know many that made the mistake of not taking a holiday to Canada till over.   From my small hometown alone ...

Personally, I enlisted in ‘67. Not because I thought the war was just, but because my fellow Americans were doing what their country asked of them. I felt it my duty to at least help them.

We live in an intercontinental world, what happens to our allies, influence our wealth and markeds, so better sit back and let your trade partners fade away, and collaborate with their enemies instead? 

 

Thats short minded. Many Today Americans do not understand how important 2. WW was for their own good and wealth. From the hard 20 ies and 30 ies to world most powerful country since the romans in the western world. 

 

It cost them 350 000 men, another 80k to maintain it for 80 years. Now, ready to turn their back to old allies

I enlisted in '76', and was still in HS till '73'.

Sadly, I confess after 41 years teaching history to lack the stamina and desire to try to educate far too many who seem unable or unwilling to listen to those who have made a lifetime of study.
