Driverless “Ghost” Lorry Spins Around Central Island for 10 Minutes After Crash

A six-wheeled lorry inexplicably began reversing and spinning in circles around a central traffic island for over ten minutes, without a driver, on the Kalasin–Kamalasai Road.

The incident occurred near Ban Tao Hai, in Lub Subdistrict of Mueang Kalasin District, roughly 50 metres from the Tao Hai traffic lights. The lorry had reportedly been parked with its hazard lights flashing, in a coned off area facing oncoming traffic, while road workers marked lines on a freshly paved stretch of tarmac.

However, witnesses were stunned when the stationary lorry suddenly began reversing on its own, after being struck by a car, climbing onto and circling the central island of the road, moving erratically for more than ten minutes. Bystanders and motorists capturing video footage and nearby CCTV cameras also recorded the bizarre scene. With no one behind the wheel, some locals even dubbed it a “ghost lorry”.

According to eyewitnesses, the lorry had been safely parked while work crews marked the road surface. The situation changed when a black saloon car came speeding through the well lit section and slammed into the parked lorry. The collision caused significant damage to the car’s front end. The male driver of the vehicle was slightly injured and transported to hospital by rescue services.

Authorities stated the driver believes that the darkness of the evening may have contributed to him failing to notice the parked lorry in time. Crucially, it is suspected that the lorry had been left in reverse gear. Upon being struck from behind, the force of the collision may have jolted the truck’s ignition systems, somehow causing the engine to start and engage in the reverse movement, leading to the lorry’s eerie, driverless motion around the traffic island.

Fortunately no one else was seriously injured. Nevertheless, the incident has caused widespread curiosity, with some residents continuing to joke about supernatural causes.

Local police from Mueang Kalasin Police Station are conducting a full investigation into the incident, including interviews with all involved parties, and will determine whether any legal action is to follow.
