Crime Teen Conflict in Samut Prakan Leaves One Injured in Late-Night Altercation
Picture courtesy of KhaoSod A post-birthday celebration quickly turned violent for a group of teenagers in Samut Prakan, resulting in the injury of 18-year-old Warathep. The incident took place early this morning, May 29, at 2.30am near a shop on Kusang-Pracha Uthit Road in the Phra Samut Chedi district, escalating into a clash involving gunfire and a knife attack. Police Colonel Pojanakorn Ganjina and his team from the Phra Samut Chedi Police Station, together with emergency services, responded to reports of the violent disturbance. Warathep was found unconscious with a gunshot wound to his right thigh and a knife-cut wound on his back. Police discovered bullets in his jeans, along with evidence such as shattered beer bottles, bullet casings, a machete, and a gun holder at the scene. According to 27-year-old eyewitness Tanwa, the altercation began between two groups of teenagers, each comprising five to six individuals. Amidst the argument, gunshots rang out, prompting Tanwa and others to seek refuge inside a nearby shop. Following the chaos, the groups had fled, and Warathep was found injured behind the shop. The investigation led to the apprehension of two 16-year-olds, Phong and Chat, who were involved in the conflict. Phong revealed that Warathep's birthday celebration with friends preceded the violence. The group departed on motorcycles to escort Warathep’s girlfriend home, but a change of plans due to rain led them to encounter hostility from a black pickup truck on Kusang-Pracha Uthit Road. The confrontation with the pickup's occupants escalated into gunfire, forcing Chat and Warathep to return fire, despite having a malfunctioning gun. Subsequently, another group of teenagers from a nearby shop joined the fray, attacking Chat and Warathep. Phong managed an escape on his motorcycle, only discovering Warathep’s grave condition later. The police continue to investigate by interviewing those involved, reviewing witness accounts, and analysing CCTV footage to identify all parties in the altercation. The incident highlights the prevalence of teen violence, underscoring the need for interventions to prevent such dangerous situations in the future. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-05-29 -

Crime Motorbike Taxi Dispute Turns Deadly in Bangkok; Suspect Charged
Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post A personal feud between two motorcycle taxi drivers in Bangkok tragically ended in death, as one driver fatally stabbed the other. The incident unfolded on May 24 near a U-turn on Rama IV Road, heading towards Asok, stemming from a personal grievance rather than a professional rivalry over customers. The victim, known only as Mr Apiwat, reportedly confronted Mr Froy, the alleged attacker, while under the influence of alcohol. Mr Apiwat was upset with Mr Froy for not intervening in an earlier altercation involving their colleague "Beer," who had clashed with a rival driver a few days prior. Details emerging from police reports indicate that Mr Apiwat approached Mr Froy with a knife, but during the ensuing confrontation, Mr Froy managed to seize the weapon and allegedly stab Mr Apiwat. Both individuals worked at the same motorcycle taxi stand located in front of the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. An area supervisor revealed that the initial conflict occurred on May 20, when "Beer" got into a scuffle with a driver from a competing area. That issue had been addressed internally, with disciplinary measures and negotiations between group leaders preventing further escalation until this tragic incident. Pol Col Rattanon Aekthitikunphat, chief of Thong Lor police, confirmed that Mr Froy turned himself in on the evening of May 26. He faces charges of premeditated murder and carrying a knife in public. His pre-trial detention has been extended as legal proceedings continue. This incident casts a somber light on the often tense environment among motorcycle taxi drivers in Bangkok, highlighting the need for continued efforts in conflict resolution and community dialogue to prevent future tragedies.
