Mom didn't really know her daughter that well. Not unusual. However, the daughter almost certainly knew what she was doing. The fact she died in Thailand is merely incidental.

Many years ago it was found that a surprisingly high %'age of £20 notes had a trace of cocaine on them in London.

To lose your daughter in these tragic circumstances demands sympathy, empathy and support. Clearly the roots of this are criminals who sell harmful dangerousl drugs. Tourists need protecting wherever they are in Thailand & these deeply sad stories need police investigations, local solutions not finger pointing. I hope the mother can help stop these serious problems somehow.

And in the west, they probably bought it directly from someone they trusted.

 

Here, they bought something from someone who got it from someone whose language they probably didn't speak.

Its not really in a dealers interest to sell dangerus drugs,  you want repeat customers, not kill them off

This is old news.  Seen it before.  Don't do drug cocktails.  If you die, it's your own stupidity.  

Sorry mom.  At 36 your kids are full grown adults.  There are consequence to actions.  Like death. Your kid f'ed up.  Other 30 somethings will come to Thailand and do the same thing regardless of your dire warnings.  Nothing you say is gonna change the behavior of an adult who wants to walk on the wild side and ends up dead.

Mummy seems to be oblivious to the street drug trade in her own backyard.  So? Why come to Thailand and moan about street drugs?  That doesn't make sense to me.  Her daughter, had she lived, had a greater chance of OD'ing in the UK.

Looks like mummy is on a crusade to attack the horrible drug problems in Thailand while ignoring the higher incidence of drug problems in the UK.  I do find it interesting that higher numbers of drug deaths in the UK sort of highlights the fact that drug abuse may be more endemic among UK youth and adults - like her dear Rebecca - who then comes to Thailand and continue that pattern.  Makes me wonder what Rebecca's drug consumption was like back in the UK?  Did the dear girl have a cocaine habit that followed her to Thailand? You don't just wake up one morning and say, "Hummm I thing I'll find a drug dealer and buy some Thai cocaine to snort."   This ain't my first rodeo - I've been around that scene at her age, but I sure as hell would not come to Thailand and indulge in drugs outside of cannabis which is now legal.  Back when it was illegal I stayed away from it too. Why - first it's illegal and prison sucks in Thailand, and second, you don't have a clue what your "white powder" contains. Thailand IS NOT a cocaine hub. It is a hub for methamphetamine and heroin and rave drugs like X. If you're doing drugs like what you believe to be cocaine in Thailand, you're almost 100% sure to have been doing cocaine and other "party drugs" (X analogues) back at home. And those doing those drugs back in the UK know dealers who can generally vouch for the authenticity of whatever you're snorting. You come to Thailand an buy "white powder" from Somchai_Nobody and you die. No surprise there.  There is only one person responsible for that.  The "snortee."  

Come to Thailand, enjoy the liberal cannabis laws, stay away from the crap you consume back in the UK (or other Western countries). Have a beer, smoke a joint, enjoy your vacation.

If your adult "child" dies from hard drugs in Thailand - it's not Thailand's fault.  Sorry - brutal truth, but there you have it!

SEAsia is possibly one of the worst places in the world to mess with drugs....for reasons ranging from penalties to poor quality.  In a land of fakes and knock offs just why?  I dont even trust the weed here.

Nope - a lot of us have participated in this circus in the past and can vouch for the two dead UK adult's stupidity or utter ignorance. I'll go for the former in this case.

When I came to Thailand 18 years ago, I stayed away from all illegal drugs. I knew the consequences.  What I might have indulged in back in the West where a lot of these substances might have gotten you a misnomer "ticket" if the cops and the local DA even cared,  would in turn get you hard prison time here. If adults who do drugs are so daft as to not understand drug laws in the foreign countries they visit - well - there are consequences. Prison and Death are two of those. There is nothing "after the event" to that.  Whether is is in Central London, South Central LA, Seattle, Copenhagen, Bangkok, or Koh_Wherever, there are some things that are just stupid that you don't do.  And you know your limits.  And you know and understand the laws and consequences.  You understand the drug scene and how it works where you chose to participate.  If you don't?  Don't. If you do and die or go to prison, don't complain.

Back during the COVID (vaccine) years I heard some younger people state that they didn't want the vaccine cos they were choosey about what they put into their bodies. But I suspected not so choosey as to not buy (dodgy) drugs from dodgy people in nightclubs or on the street.

I know of an American guy who lives in Bangkok who admits to "slinging dope" (heroin) when he lived in Philadelpia. I've long suspected that people who get in trouble over illicit drugs in Thailand were involved in them in some way or other where they come from.

It never ceases to amaze me how flippant and heartless some of the comments on here are. Parents have lost their children. Brothers and sisters have lost their siblings.

 

Most of those commenting probably consume a drug more dangerous than cocaine every single day — alcohol. If alcohol were illegal and they didn’t drink, they'd likely have the same scornful attitude toward those who do. But the facts speak for themselves: alcohol is the most harmful drug overall, almost three times as harmful as cocaine or tobacco.

 

I don’t drink or do drugs myself, but let’s be honest, this couple had probably done a bit of coke here and there at parties over the years, like millions of others. They were in Bangkok, having a good time. If they’d bought a clean batch, they’d have come home safely and gone on with their lives. Do I advise against it, yes, do I think people are stupid for doing it, yes – but I've been no saint in my life. 

 

Instead, they made a tragic mistake in a place known for scams, dangerous drink and adulterated drugs. As if none of you have ever done something reckless, immoral or stupid. As if you’ve never made a mistake.

 

Take a good look in the mirror and reflect on the phrase: "There but for the grace of God go I".
