A 32-year-old driver in Vietnam has been hit with a hefty fine of VND35 million (US$1,345) and had 10 points deducted from his driver's licence after he reversed on the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen Expressway. The incident, which occurred at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, was addressed by the Traffic Police Department of Thai Nguyen Provincial Police.

Caught on dashcam, the driver's dangerous manoeuvre took place after he missed the exit ramp at the Song Cong interchange. Instead of proceeding to the next exit, he reversed his four-seat vehicle on the expressway, with hazard lights on, narrowly avoiding a collision with an oncoming car.

Vietnam's traffic regulations assign 12 points to each driver's license. When all points are lost, the driver faces a ban and must wait at least six months before retaking the driving test. Losing 10 points for this dangerous action puts the driver precariously close to losing his licence altogether.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences of violating traffic rules in Vietnam, especially on busy expressways where safety is paramount. The authorities' swift action underscores their commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring road safety for all users.
