This is a quality-of-life topic from someone who is averaging about 2000 posts per month since joining AN 6 FEB (this year).

What is off topic, the OP thread? Strange comment mate

I like the OP's topics, always good reading and to the point.

Very related to the typical expat here in Thailand.

2000 posts per month........I'll have to go searching for these posts, I haven't commented on them yet, I'd like to voice my opinion.

I'm not grumpy ...........

Generally I'm happy and content with my life in Thailand, my much younger wife, my teen son and my home.

How's the girl that you helped doing?

Health?

Sick of life?

My guess is all 3

While I would imagine that being in poor health or having no money is a big factor in misery, I think there's likely another big cause in grumpiness in old-age.

I think some people spend their lives focussing on more physical things, and when those things go away in old-age, those people become miserable.  Someone who spent much of their youth concentrating on drinking, f*cking and fighting, for example, would probably become pretty depressed once they get too old to do those things.

I think someone who focusses more on things like family, friends, and helping others, can still access these things once they get older.  Perhaps, though, these types might not end up living in Thailand in their old-age.

I can't imagine anyone in uni (if applicable, hope it is) says, "I'll go to Thailand where I can't speak the language, girls will only want my money, the heat will beat me down, and i'll cough because of the smoke as immigration bangs on my door while I eat my 20 baht noodle soup!!!"

This has been a great decade escape before retirement.    Probably one more year and then back home.   I can't tell you how many farangs have asked me for money, favors, confessed crimes, drank at noon, etc......that's fine but it's not for me forever.   girls are fine, but not to marry. deep conversation impossible  place is beautiful, and a decade is long enough to enjoy.   easy, easy, easy, easy life.  that's what i wanted, but not forever.  cheapest place in the world as far as food and housing (except for the weekly farang food).  yes, things are getting more expensive now but it's relative.

you must be social, make real friends, connections, be rooted in a community.    that's not really possible here, i saw that during COVID.  that's fine, never called this place home.  but I think overall everyone (Thais) have been wonderful.

slight regret.  10 years was too long.  7-8 was right.   everyone should do it, but if you have the financial means i'd rather be cold with a support group when i get well into my retirement.

to each their own.  some love it, some deal with it, some hate it.   i'll rank this place 87/100.

grumpy is, IMO, about regret and we must own it ourself.  Has a little to do with Thailand, but more about a cumulation of bad decisions.   When I was 28, I bet I knew this lifestyle would happen to me.   10 years of a real job back in America or 10 years of escape in Thailand.  The grass isn't greener, just different.  I'd probably be slightly grumpy back home as well.   Only slightly.    "so grumpy" really means you are lost, no hope, defeatist.  Yes, you see that here and back home.  very sad.  could happen to anyone.

No one is forcing you to live near the bar scene forever either.

Is it really a sustainable lifestyle for years on end?

No need to be grumpy as we age.  Look at the good times and reminisce.

My first exposure to Thailand was April, 1980.  End of the Carter administration.  Thank God.   8 years of Reagan to follow.

Note the Naklua skyline, or lack of.   Beach road beer bar.

10 years later during Cobra Gold, I still had an ass left.

Nothing stays the same forever.

Agree 100% - But an edit if I may -  Perhaps, though, these types might not end up living in Thailand in their old-age.  Perhaps, though, these types might not end up living alone in Thailand in their old-age.

Some blokes were so financially wrapped that they decided to never let it happen again, which meant saving up money and retiring early to live in a country with marriage laws that were not written by woke feminist gender studies beetches and designed to allow women to financially screw over a man with impunity.

I tend to agree with you overall, but most of the Expats I know in Thailand are not in that position. They are living in a house they bought (for wife) and enjoying life as much as possible given their health and financial siuation. They recognised long ago that the 'George Best lifestyle' never lasts - there is more to life than just alcohol and sex when one gets older (if they want to get older).   Some of us are in a position of being able to go back home when the health and/or money become an issue - but some of us are not - but either way life is short, and you are where you are for many reasons (so own it).

Guessing is so much easier than any other cerebral activity so I'm not surprised it's your default option.  At least it's an honest expression showing your lack of desire to educate yourself or others.

Susan's topics are dull, predictable, and pedestrian. He loves himself just a little too much. I guess that's why you like him, birds of a feather and all that 😂

And yet, the prior 10 topics, generated ~1160 replies, and 10s of 1000s of views ... $$$$$$$$$$

... and you, 2 posts & 2 complaints :coffee1:

That because this forum has slid so far from it's former glory that Susan's mundane topics get all the dull old guys fired up 🤣

Mate, you're not as good as you think you are. Dial down the FIGJAM a few notches and you might actually be halfway interesting.

As for the recently joining thing, are you really that restarted?
