Unfortunately, while ascending the steep hotel path, Bruce, reportedly under the influence, lost her footing and fell approximately 6 to 7 metres.

That sounds very dodgy?

Alcohol or not, no safety barriers, or did she literally fall back down the slope/steps??

No doubt there will be a go fund me .com insurance policy set up as so many insurance policies won’t pay out now due to alcohol / drugs in the system.

People have to take more responsibility for their actions , have just one or two drinks with your meal and leave it at that , get yourself onto non alcohol drinks after that , get yourselves home safe

I haven't had a drink in over 35 years and I could have easily fallen down those steps without a railing.  Especially if they had odd step spacing like so many projects in Thailand.

There doesn't seem to be much thought of building codes that could have easily prevented this tragedy.

The fall resulted in devastating injuries, including a broken neck, fractured nose, and injuries to her wrist and ankle.

Yeah - a broken neck will sort of end your holiday.

Builders are not good with mathematics making staircases here.  I regularly trip on stairs that are inches different on one step when the builders didn't calculate correctly or eyeballed the construction.  When you are not looking down you assume each stair step will be the same.  This might have been a contributing factor.

Especially those of us who come from the nanny states where we probably never encountered uneven steps.

Under the influence is now the newbrake failure…one trip/fall w/o being drunk…

did they actually do a blood test when trying to save her life? Hard to believe…

having drinks doesn’t always equate to be legally drunk

Uneven steps equal third world construction…more of a reflection of poor standards or poor engineers or both

and now Thai students can’t go to USA to study engineering

"Isn't it the responsibility of the road owner (government or hotel) to ensure there are no potentially fatal drops from it? Is suggesting a barrier of some kind too complex? "

No, this is not Kansas....  it's your responsibility not to be so p*ssed as a fart that you can't navigate a simple flight of steps....

Benefit of a doubt, it's easy for anyone to stumble, especially in the dark. Especially if in a good mood and chatting with someone. And some of us are simply clumsy.
