If you think a courier is more secure and that makes you feel better, you should probably use the physical address and not the PO.

Just pointing out again/quoting @cusanus earlier post providing the address to use if using Thailand Postal or a courier service "if that courier service will not accept a P.O. box address."

Am I interpreting this correctly? ALL mail service to the US is suspended? What?

So anything mailed yesterday is okay or not? It will go through or be returned?

He devalues the dollar.

Disrupts SSA.

And now puts a torpedo into international mail.

Oops. Almost forgot the remittance tax.

For expatriates, Trump's work has only just begun.

Don't forget the $50 million reward for info leading to arrest of Maduro. He is, quite rightly totally insane. Anyway, this means we cannot use the return envelope for the 7160 form next year (or this year if it hasn't been mailed yet)? So, poof, no more ssa retirement for you and me because we must mail the proof of life form but mail service is now over? Is that what's coming?

Speaking of Donald's remittance tax see below Wise weblink for details.

If not insane, then he certainly acts like those slack-jawed goobers who used to call in to talk radio back in the 80s and 90s.

So that says no tax on withdrawals from US accounts or debit cards. I guess that's a relief, although it probably means the remittance tax will miss a lot of its prime targets, Mexican illegals, because I think all they need to open a US bank account is a matricula consular issued by Mexican consulates.

Hi, I'm dead. I still filed an FBAR and my taxes earlier this year... you know, because that's what dead people do.  [insufficient eye roll emoji available]

If he was actually serious about cutting waste, stopping this form would help.

Flip a coin?

I assume the embassy pouches will still go through, yeah? Push come to shove maybe they would help us.

Just kidding!

Expats -- are we angry yet? If not what would it take?

Why do you think I left 20 years ago. Making 1/5 average salary for my credentials? Having to put up with child porn being planted on staff computers for five years? Having to listen to penis and vagina giggles for five years? Because the savings in COL in Thailand is twice my former salary? Well, I was angry then and on the verge of going postal, but not angry since. Maybe a little bored at times, but Trump gets credit for getting me excited. But if he trashes my social security I'll be angry, boy oh howdy.

Donald's executive order also impacting mail out of South Korea to US.   I expect quite a few countries are being impacted.  Oh Donald what a tangled web you weave.

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/southkorea/society/20250822/foreign-residents-face-disruptions-as-express-mail-stopped-under-new-us-rules

As national postal services around the world are affected by the new U.S. customs policy, several countries have taken similar steps. China and Hong Kong have already suspended some postal services, with Thailand, Singapore, France, Switzerland, Denmark and Belgium following suit.

The Korean article is about sending 'goods'.  Documents are not impacted by this change. Sending 'documents' such as Form 7162 via EMS is still available.

Trump doesn't ever deal with details.

He doesn't write the EOs.
They are developed by Project 2025 operatives.

So as far as worrying about negative consequences?

As of 22 Aug 2025/8:45pm when you go to the Thailand Post website to calculate postage by various mailing methods the "only offered method of mailing to the US is via "Courier Post;" no regular mail, no registered mail, no EMS, etc...etc...etc.     I entered the approx size and weight of the 7162 return envelope into the ThaiPostal calculator and the price to mail an envelope to the US is Bt1,530 via Courier Post Document.

Now if you then select another country to mail to like the UK you are then offered 18 ways to mail to the UK....the 18 ways that use to be also offered for mail to the US until Donald's executive order disrupted things.

The problem I see is that it requires a physical address, not a PO Box.

Someone posted this address:
Social Security Administration
Data Operations Center
Attn: SSA-7162 Process
1150 E. Mountain Drive
Wilkes-Barre, PA 18767-7162
U.S.A.

Street deliveries (couriers like Thai Courier Post) to that facility should use the street ZIP 18702-7997, not the P.O. Box ZIP. Using a P.O. Box ZIP. This could misroute mail. SSA pages that publish courier addresses for Wilkes-Barre use 1150 E. Mountain Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702-7997.

With the rates you provided (thanks for doing that), this would be an expensive mistake, not to mention the fact that it might not reach the destination.

The nightmare continues. Are we great yet? 🤷‍♂️

Thai Post is not accepting any letters or packages, presumably for fear that each item -- including ordinary mail -- will be charged the Trump Tax, payable by the US recipient. In Thailand's case, that is $160 per letter. Think about mail-in voting.  Now add Australia, NZ, Korea, Germany, Czech. Looks like all mail to the USA will cease. Some couriers are also suspending service.

Sec. 2.  Suspension of Duty-Free de minimis Treatment.  (a)  The duty-free de minimis exemption provided under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) shall no longer apply to any shipment of articles not covered by 50 U.S.C. 1702(b), regardless of value, country of origin, mode of transportation, or method of entry.

How did you come up with $160?  Is that a typo? Was it meant to be 160 Baht?

Via Courier Post is still available according to the ThaiPostal announcement posted earlier and when you go to the ThaiPostal website shipment calculator Courier Post is the "only" method shown.   Don't confuse Courier Post and EMS as being the same animal....they are not.

Regarding is it $160 or Bt160?...it's $160 (USD) when certain conditions of Donald's order at not met.   Review Donald's executive order posted earlier via weblink.

This 23 Aug 2025 news article gives a good overview of how Donald's order is affecting mail/shipments from Thailand "and many other countries".....numerous other countries postal systems are also temporarily suspending mail services to the U.S. and referring customers to private carriers, like DHL, ThaiNexus, etc., who can still ship to the US since private carriers are setup better to handle tariff issues.

Oh, it's on a couple of web pages I don't recall right now, but when the suspended tariff is removed that was the estimate of the cost to send a letter. That's why in effect the postal service to US must be suspended. Also, I read that some couriers are also bowing out, DHL anyway. This is just stuff I read, I have no proof, but makes sense to me. Don't ask what "certain" items refers to . This is taken by some to include letters.

Is this “are you dead “ form only for recipients who reside permanently overseas and list their domicile as overseas or for everyone regardless if they reside overseas or America?

I believe if you've resided in another country continually for more than six months of the year you must file the form with new address or benefits will be suspended next Feb. Of course, some don't report the foreign address and nobody knows, but you're supposed to report the new address or other changes relative to the X boxes on the form that might affect your benefit.

If indeed it's $160 to mail a document, then perhaps the US Embassy or the FBU should offer this transfer service.  There has to be a fix. How quickly can they find a fix on this time-sensitive issue, that is the burning question then?
