In a testament to effective emergency response and cooperation, Đà Nẵng City Police successfully intervened to rescue a Russian tourist in distress by the Hàn River. The incident unfolded late Saturday night into Sunday morning, when the city’s police received alarming reports of a foreign man exhibiting suicidal behaviour near the river.

The tourist, identified as M.V., a 24-year-old Russian national, faced emotional turmoil, reportedly stemming from personal relationship issues. His psychological struggles led him to contemplate jumping into the river from the eastern railings of Bạch Đằng Street.

Once alerted, the Đà Nẵng Police Department of Fire Prevention, Fighting and Rescue promptly dispatched an emergency team. Already in place for regional fireworks security, units included a specialised rescue vehicle and seven officers who rushed to the site to assess and act swiftly.

Responders quickly identified M.V. precariously standing on the river's edge, clutching a lamp post for support. Officers strategically positioned themselves around the scene—some closer to the water to intervene if necessary, while others approached cautiously, engaging in calm negotiation and persuasion tactics to draw him back to safety.

The rescue operation, marked by the patient and steady efforts of the police, succeeded after about 30 tense minutes. M.V. was carefully escorted away from the potential danger, ensuring his physical safety.

Following the intervention, M.V. was handed over to local diplomatic authorities, facilitating access to continued care and support. Đà Nẵng Police, in coordination with these diplomatic representatives, are actively working to provide essential mental health services to address his distress and ensure his overall well-being during his stay in Vietnam.

This incident underscores the importance of rapid response and inter-agency cooperation in crisis scenarios, highlighting the city’s commitment to the safety and welfare of both its residents and visitors.
