Last Friday, authorities in Da Nang imposed a significant fine on Da Nang - Coral Reef Dive Center, a tourism and trading firm operating the Temple Resort Danang. This decision came after an inspection uncovered several violations, sparking serious concerns over environmental and health standards.

Located at 11 Vo Nguyen Giap Street, the resort became the focal point of scrutiny following complaints in mid-April. Residents and tourists at Phuoc My Beach reported a foul odour emanating from a wastewater discharge pipeline belonging to the resort. The municipal administration swiftly acted on these complaints, leading to an inspection on April 18 that confirmed untreated wastewater was being directly released onto the beach.

Further investigations revealed that the resort had failed to comply with environmental protection regulations. They had not entered into a contract with a licensed unit for hazardous waste treatment and were also found to be improperly storing hazardous waste, exacerbating the environmental impact.

The inspection also identified violations of food safety standards within the resort's hotel and restaurant operations. Inspectors highlighted these infractions as part of a broader array of non-compliances jeopardising customer safety and public health.

As a result of these numerous breaches, the firm was fined VND224.5 million (approximately $8,600). This financial penalty aims to ensure accountability and push the company towards addressing and correcting its practices.

Beyond the immediate financial repercussions, the firm is mandated to take urgent action to remediate the environmental damage caused by their operations and to rectify all food safety violations to align with regulatory standards.

This isn’t the first time the firm has been caught violating environmental rules. Back in 2018, the Son Tra District administration fined the firm VND15 million ($575) for similar offences, highlighting a pattern of negligence that has now equated to a larger penalty and greater scrutiny.

The authorities’ decisive action underscores an increasing vigilance towards upholding environmental integrity and public safety in Da Nang's tourism industry, reinforcing the message that compliance is not optional but essential.
