LivingNThailand Posted Thursday at 05:37 AM Posted Thursday at 05:37 AM I need to renew my USA passport before my next visa extension in March. I also need to renew my driver's license in September. My plan is to renew my passport early so I can have the new passport number on my new driver's license, thus avoiding several unnecessary trips to immigration and the Department of Land Transport. A couple of questions for anyone who has renewed their USA passport recently. 1. The embassy website states that it takes 6-8 weeks to process a new passport. The last time my wife did it about 4-5 years ago it was only 18 days from the post office to my door. Has anyone experienced this long time frame or a shorter time frame? 2. The fee of $130. The application form says I can pay in the form of a personal check or money order. I have some old checks for my USA bank account. They are still good. Do you think I can use one of those checks, or should I get a money order? 3. On the checklist list it says application fees: A printout of the electronic payment confirmation. Is this in lieu of the check or money order? How do you pay electronically? This part is confusing. Electronically or by check / money order for payment of $130. 4. Insured return envelope fees. The checklist says pay Courier Pass Back electronically via Thailand Post Mart website. I found the website and signed up for an account but can't find anywhere to order and pay for the return envelope. Thanks for any assistance you may give me. The last time I renewed my passport I went to the Embassy Outreach program in Patong and they took care of most of the items for me. Things have gotten a bit more electronically sophisticated since then.

Popular Post Tod Daniels Posted yesterday at 02:02 AM Popular Post Posted yesterday at 02:02 AM They post on the website that processing time, but recently did a US passport renewal for an elderly friend up country and he got both passports delivered to his door about 43 days after I sent the packet to the ACS division of the US Embassy here in bangkok via EMS Thai Post. AFAIK they don't do the "cashier check" option any more for passport renewal by mail and you pay thru the online dot gov portal You pay thru this portal for the US passport https://www.pay.gov/public/form/start/1156527186/ You BUY a return postage envelope from Thai Post Mart, and include the receipt of purchase and they send both passports to you with it You pay thru this portal for the return postage envelope https://www.thailandpostmart.com/product/1013460000929 2 4

Pay by credit card via the pay.gov portal as noted above. Can pay by credit card for the mailback envelope at Thai Post Mart. 1
sqwakvfr Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Sent in my passport renewal packet to BKK embassy 17 days ago. The checklist is straighforwad and paying with a credit card was seamless. The Thai Post return envelope process is not difficult as long as one clicks to the English version on the TP website. Just got a confirmation from State that my application has been recieved and renewal process is ongoing. I have been quoted 4 to 6 weeks to get the new passport. 1
Jingthing Posted 21 hours ago Posted 21 hours ago Just did this. 35 days total. Embassy in Bangkok. CM consulate might be different. The trickier part is after the new passport arrived back in Bangkok. The embassy says that Thai Post sends an email with tracking number.when the package is picked up at the embassy. NO they don't. The embassy also doesn't send an email about that. You can get tracking number from the Thai Post site where you bought the envelope. However you'll need to check that everyday until it shows something. Also often you need to search twice as often it shows nothing on first try.

I took a quick peek at the websites and will check it out tomorrow, I'm a bit under the weather today with sinus problems. The only question I have right now is whether the return postage envelope comes to me, and I mail it with my passport to the American Embassy, or if they send the prepaid envelope directly to the Embassy. I think I'm borderline elderly 😅. Thanks for the help.

You buy the Thai Post Mary return postage envelope online, you include the receipt/confirmation of having done that in the application packet It's the embassy that gets the envelope to mail the passports to you once they get them from the USA All you do us buy the envelope thru the website and send proof you did with the packet. The Embassy does all the rest Go SLOW, it's not a race, follow the page and especially the checklist TO THE LETTER 🙂 <- not following the directions exactly as they're written is what messes up people (and stretches out the time line 😕 ) 1 1 1
Jingthing Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Pay careful attention to the photo requirements as there are many and quite specific. You need to know so that you can prepare and also oversee the process at the photo place as they will tend to know basic things such as required US size but not necessarily all the details. For example -- background color, no glasses, no big open mouth smiles to be safe don't smile at all, the size of the head in the photo has a range of specs, no shadows, look straight at the camera, and more. No need to dress formally but obviously no wifebeaters. On my first take this time my head was tilted a bit which may or may not have been OK but the photo people didn't know about that rule so got to do a second take with that in mind. 1 1

I nearly got royally screwed because of this. I went to a popular professional photo place in Pattaya and was quite clear I wanted pics for a US passport. They instead gave me UK photos, and to my untrained eye they looked fine. I can't say frequently enough how grateful I am for this outfit just off Soi Buakhao: https://thaivisa-express.com/ I decided to let them handle getting me a new passport and they immediately noticed the problem. And the girls at the front desk are quite fetching. Their website says UK and Thai passports but they also handle US as well.

Or you can go to the post office and buy a return envelope.
