In an audacious event that unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, a group of Chinese nationals was apprehended after allegedly ambushing a Vietnamese taxi driver with pepper spray and stealing his vehicle on an expressway. This unexpected attack took place around 2 a.m. at the Mai Son–National Highway 45 interchange, situated in Dong Khe Commune, Thanh Hoa Province.

Nguyen Trong Manh, a local taxi driver, recounted how he halted his vehicle to aid what appeared to be passengers in distress. However, this act of goodwill was swiftly met with hostility. Manh described how he was ambushed and pepper-sprayed by the group, who subsequently commandeered his 7-seater taxi, also seizing two of his mobile phones, before driving off towards Hanoi.

The Thanh Hoa police quickly initiated a comprehensive manhunt to apprehend the culprits, utilising surveillance video and Manh's detailed account to trace their path. Remarkably, by 7 a.m., authorities successfully intercepted the suspects over 250 kilometres away in Luc Ngan District, Bac Giang Province.

The group has been identified as Chinese nationals originating from Guangxi. However, details regarding their specific identities and underlying motives are still being investigated. The arrest signifies swift action by Vietnamese law enforcement in response to international crime, underscoring their dedication to maintaining public safety and enforcing justice.

This incident highlights the measures and challenges involved in cross-border crime response and prevention, with regional police collaboration proving instrumental in the rapid resolution of such criminal activities. As the investigation unfolds, further information about the suspects and the circumstances surrounding the attack is expected to emerge, providing deeper insight into this early morning ambush on Vietnamese soil.
