My wife holds a single Kbank deposit account.

My question is, can she also hold a joint bank account with myself, either myself or my wife as first named holder?

If she isn’t Thai then she might find it difficult to open any sort of account right now.

She is Thai and having looked through the banks T&C, yes we can.

Just so you know,

UOB allowed us to have a joint THB acct with separate debit cards. We can access the joint acct using the app from either of our phones, and we have separate logins for web-based banking.

We also have a joint SCB acct with 1 debit card & a bank book. SCB wouldn't allow us to access the joint acct on either of our phones. I cancelled my THB acct, hoping they would let me put the joint acct on my phone, but they wouldn't allow it. We just consider it to be our ultra-safe savings acct, since it has no online access.

We never asked Kasikorn about a joint acct, but I'm pretty sure you can get one. I don't know if they will give you separate debit cards. Better to just go in the bank and ask.

Nah, not smart-ass. Only instinct told me that, actually. Didn´t even have to think.

But, thank you. It´s nice to know you loved it and thought it was awesome.

You are perfectly right in that reply. Just a question about the specifics of some.

Has this answered the actual question?

Seems to me the question is can the foreigner open a joint account with the name of the foreigner named first and the wife named second in regard to the name of the account holder? I guess that means right now.

I have several joint savings accounts with K Bank, my name first then the name of my adult Thai son. But all were open 10 - 15 years ago, maybe the regulations have changed.

As you might expect both myself and my son had to be present with proof of ID to open the account and we were told that for any changes to be made to the account we would both need to be present with ID.

With K Bank, for a joint savings account, they issue ONE debit card only.

I was advised by Bangkok Bank that I could not open a joint account with my Thai partner as we were not married. I did have an existing account with them.

I worked in a bank and no not in Thailand but what relavency does whose name is first make. Only regulation was either joint signature or either signature for withdrawals. Also affects what happens to the account if one of the party dies.

How does that work?

My name is first; Thai wife second. They withhold 15% tax on earned interest. Wife's individual accounts don't have withholding tax. My individual account does. Wonder if joint account had her name first, whether or not tax would be withheld...... No big deal, as it's just an additional amount added to a single line on Schedule 3 of US 1040 tax return, for a one for one tax credit.

I think scorecard you took line from my post....also affects what happens to the account if one of the parties dies.

As I stated have not worked in thai bank but in two other western countries.....

A joint account with both signatures to operate, on the death of one of the parties the account is frozen and goes to probate where usually half is included in the estate of the deceased BUT other party cannot access there portiion until resolved by probate.

A joint account with either signature is not affected by death of one party and the surviving party can continue to draw down on balance of account. Normally if declared the bank will close joint account and open account in name of survivor. Have heard here they require both signatures to close a joint account, surviving or either party could draw down to a minimal balance to circumvent this.
