A violent thunderstorm hit Hanoi on Sunday evening, causing the collapse of a pickleball court roof and forcing players to seek safety. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at a popular facility on Pham Hung Street in Nam Tu Liem District.

Witnesses reported a sudden gust of wind bending a support column, leading to the 800-square-metre metal roof's failure. Remarkably, all 20 players managed to escape without injury.

"Just seconds after we got out, the roof came crashing down," one player recounted.

The facility, featuring 10 courts under a lightweight metal frame, has been a hub for Hanoi’s burgeoning pickleball community since it opened in late 2024. Its accessibility and the sport’s simplicity have attracted many players.

Pickleball, combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, is rapidly gaining popularity in Vietnam, especially in urban areas with limited court space but high recreational demand.
