A 39-year-old man is in custody following a shocking machete attack in Khun Han district, Sisaket province. The incident unfolded around 12.10pm on June 17, as police responded to reports from Ban Huay, Moo 8, in the Krawan subdistrict.

The attack left 27-year-old bank employee, Natnicha, critically injured with severe head wounds. After initial treatment at Khun Han Hospital, she was transferred to Sisaket Hospital for more intensive care. Another man sustained minor injuries while bravely attempting to assist her.

Investigators discovered evidence of a fire in the suspect's home, hinting at arson. The suspect was reportedly in a distressed state and subdued by police with non-lethal force.

Eyewitness Suri, aged 50, described how three bank officials approached her for directions, only to be mistaken for police by the suspect. The man, Rangsan Maprang, then attacked, shattering their car window with his machete. As the officials fled, Natnicha fell, suffering further injuries as Rangsan struck.

In a courageous effort, a male bank official intervened, receiving a minor arm injury. Community members quickly moved Natnicha to safety. Suri noted that the colleague's actions likely prevented a more tragic outcome.

Village headman Siri Kulket revealed Rangsan's struggles with mental health and substance abuse, exacerbated by previous drug-related incarceration. Living alone for over a year, attempts to engage his family in his rehabilitation failed, and he had neglected psychiatric care.

Community fear had simmered due to Rangsan’s previous threats. Police have now charged him with attempted murder, property damage, and drug use after a positive drug test. Legal proceedings will continue, focusing on detailed victim interviews and further investigation.
