Thai Music Singer Chaiyathong Songphon Dies in Road Crash
Picture from responders. Chaiyathong Songphon, the Thai singer known for the classic hit Poo Kai Kai Long, has passed away at the age of 77 after a tragic road collision while cycling. At approximately 08:00 on 13 February, Aran Suthisuk, known by his stage name Chaiyathong Songphon, was cycling along the Sing Buri–Bang Rachan Road, near the Boong Kee intersection, when he was struck from behind by a motorcycle. The rider, identified as 39-year-old Wanpen Kongmalayu, lost control and collided with the rear of Chaiyathong’s bike, causing him to crash onto the road. A group of passerbys quickly assisted him and transported him to Sing Buri Hospital, where medical staff attempted to stabilise him. However, he succumbed to his injuries at 10:05. Footage from a security camera at a nearby shop confirmed that Chaiyathong was riding along the roadside when the motorcycle hit him from behind, denting the rear wheel and frame. Local shopkeeper Songkrod Chotiuan, 55, who knew the singer personally, revealed that Chaiyathong cycled past his shop every morning. He was shocked to learn that the collision involved the legendary artist, who had won the Half-Century Singer Award and was celebrated for hits such as Poo Kai Kai Long, Phuying Na Ngern, and Na Mai Thun Samai. Chaiyathong’s eldest son, Adirek Suthisuk, 54, described his father as a disciplined man who rode his bicycle at the same time every morning. “When he didn’t return home on time today, I started to worry. Then I received the devastating news that he had been in an accident and was taken to the hospital. By the time I arrived, he was gone.” Authorities have recorded statements from witnesses and the motorcycle rider involved in the collision. Further investigations are being conducted to determine whether charges will be filed. -- 2025-02-14 -
