A heart-breaking incident has struck a rural community in Sakon Nakhon, after a grandmother and her twin granddaughters drowned in a stream near their rice field shortly after finishing work in the paddy.

Emergency services were called to a location near Ban Na Duea, Na Kaeo subdistrict, Phon Na Kaeo district, Sakon Nakhon province, at approximately 15:15 on 21 June. Upon arrival, rescue teams attempted CPR but were unable to revive any of the three victims.

The deceased have been identified as Mrs. Thongyun, 63 and her 11-year-old twin granddaughters. The incident occurred near a field hut on the western edge of the village, next to a stream swollen by recent rainfall.

According to Mr. Saentawee, Mrs. Thongyun’s husband, he had briefly left the group to buy noodles from the village. During that time, his wife and the two girls had finished planting rice and are believed to have gone to the nearby stream to clean themselves. When he returned, he found their sandals by the water’s edge but no sign of them.

Authorities suspect that one or more of the victims may have slipped or been pulled under by the current. The stream, like many in the area, had become deceptively deep and fast-moving following several days of heavy rain. Post-mortem examinations confirmed death by drowning, and no signs of foul play were found.

The family has chosen not to pursue further investigation, accepting the cause of death as accidental. The bodies have been released for traditional funeral rites.

Officials are urging the public to exercise caution when working or washing near natural water sources during the rainy season. Streams may appear safe but can quickly become hazardous due to hidden depths, slippery banks and fast-moving water.
