IMHO : have roads be pedestrian friendly eg pedestrian walkways , pedestrian crossing , etc .

Are you blind? There are lots of pedestrian walkways and pedestrian crossings. Just road users don’t pay attention to them.

I've said this in another post on this website, but the problem is cognitive skills, the average Thai is lacking in that department. With an average IQ in Thailand of 88, it's no wonder where the problem lies. Drivers are focused on wants not safety, like I want to go there....so I go there. When it comes to focusing on speed limits, lane discipline, blinkers, road safety, laws, rules, regulations, etc they end up overwhelmed, so they go into a form of brain fog. What we have is a bundle of zombies driving around, and they don't care about their own safety, let alone the safety of others. At least on motorcycles they mainly self-terminate, which according to Darwin's Theory of Evolution, should work out in the end.

As a matter of interest, where did you get the IQ figure?

For the average IQ of countries in the ASEAN region, Singapore leads the way, followed by Cambodia with an average IQ of 99.75, securing it the 15th position worldwide. Myanmar is ranked 52nd globally with an average IQ of 91.18, while Vietnam holds the 60th spot with an average IQ of 89.5. Thailand is placed 64th globally with an average IQ of 88.87.

Hmm... Department of Road Safety recommends you continue your medication. You seem to be getting a little more tense, evidenced by your inability to recognise humour

There is no humor where peoples life's are concerned.

I have on occasion waited at traffic light controlled intersections with a police box and officers on duty. They stand there watching vehicles ignore the red lights and proceed through the pedestrians trying to cross the road.

Last week, I watched a woman step out to cross, there was a clearly visible red light for all traffic. A car drove right up to her and she stopped, pointed at the red light and stood her ground. It was only when the driver nudged her that the police did anything. They spoke to him briefly then went back to whatever they were doing.

Playing with their phones.

The pedestrian crossing that Dr Waraluck "Kratai" Supawatjariyakul died on while hit by a policeman (out of uniform) who was riding a "superbike" is right in front of my Condo. Kratai used to live in the same building. That crossing now has traffic lights to stop traffic while you cross.

Pedestrian crossings in Thailand do not have the same "road rules" as in western countries. Stand at a pedestrian crossing without traffic lights in Thailand waiting to cross and it's up to motorists to decide whether they want to stop or not. Overseas it is commonly compulsory, by law, to stop. And in Thailand, even if a car, or cars have stopped there's always the chance a motorcyclist comes whizzing though those stationary cars.

My attitude in Thailand while crossing a road in Thailand is always give way to motorists whether your at a pedestrian crossing or not. If you don't do this you may be the party to lose out, maybe with your life.

In the UK people people who want to use a zebra crossing just put a foot on it and the vehicles will stop.

Less pedestrians, less disease.

It is a mental disease. It comes down to third world mentality and the Darwinian survivor of the fittest mindset. Hence when driving the mentality is I need to get to my destination quick. I am stronger than the pedestrian therefore it only makes sense for the weak to yield. When I drive I will not yield to allow another car to get in front of me because I’m in the position of power to decide that and I will decide in my favor. To change this mindset first requires forceful intervention followed by education none of which is being done.

I find it incredible that people do not watch out for themselves when passing a ZEBRA crossing! Even here in Europe people just wanders straight into the street without watching if cars coming are aware of them passing!! People get killed all the time at these crossings! In Thailand they have been neglected by everyone for decades! How on earth would anyone believe that things could change over night??? Use traffic lights at these crossings! That would help!

Traffic lights and Stop signs do not stop the drivers, are you new here?!  I can walk out in a Zebra crossing, be more than half way across, and they are still trying to run me over.. I'm literally stuck in the middle of the road with no way out...IT'S INSANE!

What about teaching traffic rules when tested for obtaining driving license?

And compelling driving lessons also in the traffic?!

Hmm, so Thailand is slightly below average, for the those smart enough to be tested. And the rest…….we’ll never mind

I really don't believe that the number of pedestrian deaths is as low as 500 per year, considering the overall death toll on the roads is close to 20,000.

a shocking increase in pedestrian fatalities,

would like to know who's #1 at fault, the drivers or the pedestrians.... they are "thinking about changing laws for the drivers, maybe they should consider teaching pedestrians how to walk on the street(s) which side of the side walk, ohhh but there are no side walks what about crossing, do pedestrians use the zebra crossings, if they do then, here,  drivers at fault

Yes, whether you're walking or driving, don't ever expect Thai drivers to obey the rules of the road. Most do, but there are still many that drive their cars like they are riding a motorbike, and don't pay any attention to lanes, traffic rules (like stopping for pedestrians), or even traffic lights.

Thailand. Motorcyle has right of way over pedestrian. Car has right of way over motorcycle and pedestrians. Van has right of way over car, motorcle etc. Bus has right of way over van, car etc. Truck has right of way over everything.

I bet you believe that and teach it!

Thais opening their car door to traffic is an exception.

Why would anyone, Thai or otherwise, open their car door to traffic.  Passengers yes but most traffic is too large to go through a car door unless it's a small motorbike!

There is an unseen, but established hierarchy on Thai roads. In order of importance are....... Hi-so Drivers in expensive cars are at the top, next comes your average car owner along with delivery trucks / pick ups, then come the motorbikes, along with their various additions, after that there are the pushbikes, and finally, you, the pedestrian, at the bottom of the pecking order. Lorries and buses can be placed anywhere in the group depending how rich the owners are. In the countryside Buffalo and Cows are at the top.

BS - at the top are Thai Trucks Drivers - especially on the highways.

how silly! No headers on the columns - if you think you can prove something with a graph, at least put the information on it!!!

...and you have the figures to support that?

I think the evidence from your post suggests you know nothing about road safety.

The 1st column after the dates are UK pedestrian fatalities

Which are roughly about 100 a year less than Thailand.

Does that make Thailands figures pretty good for a developing Nation

Or does it make the UK's figures absolutely shocking for a so called developed Nation.

Hope that clears up your confusion

Perhaps some more 100+ step foot-bridges would be in order, like these in Mahasarakham !!. I have yet to see anyone using them. Perish the thought of climbing those steps carrying shopping bags on a wet day !
